Conversations with Taylor Mixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Mixon.

Taylor (Stony) Mixon

Hi Taylor, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
On my 24th birthday, I woke up with the feeling that I needed a change. I had just had my son a few months prior and was in need of a new experience.

I’ve always loved nails since a little girl. I did all my friends’ nails in school, forced my parents to buy the kiss nail kits had the house smelling for days, and did my own pedicures. Nails have always been a huge part of my life; I had just never had the courage to start my own business.

When you’ve never had the example of business ownership, starting your own can be scary. But I was done letting my fear take over my life. It wasn’t just about me anymore, I had a son who would grow and watch me, who would eventually pick up my habits. I had to be sure they were strong ones.

I ended up coming into a large amount of money randomly and decided to invest all of it. It was no turning back then. I practiced for months, perfecting my craft before I put it out into the world. I put myself through nail school to get my license. And 4 months later, I started my nail page.

It was scary hopping into a business that requires you to connect with people after being trapped in the house during covid then with a baby. I had really bad social anxiety, but again, I was not allowing fear to keep me from what God intended for me. So, I pushed forward.

When it came to choosing a name, I wanted something that fit me but also set me apart from other techs. I also wanted a name people wouldn’t forget.

I worked day in and out for months; clientele grew pretty fast, and business was going great. I thought it was almost too good to be true for a while, but I knew God was rewarding me for being consistent and trusting His plan even when I couldn’t see it for myself.

Exactly a year after I stepped out on this leap of faith, I got my first “celebrity/influencer clients.” After that, it was up! They loved how much I stood out from others and the entire experience, so much that they decided to make a reel about me. That reel got me 30+ bookings in one night and took me from 400 followers to around 2-3k followers. Your girl was booked and busy!

I took time to celebrate and soak it in, but I knew I had to keep people intrigued so I couldn’t get too comfortable there. I still knew there was more for me. So, I got into creating content which got a lot of exposure, by the time I knew it I was generating 1-2k followers every few weeks to a month. With the followers came more clientele. And although Mama was tired, I couldn’t complain about how much was on my plate when the goal was to eat! So, I kept praying and kept working.

Here I am, not even 2 years into taking that chance, and all I can say is look at what God can do with a dream. When they say all you need is faith the size of a mustard seed, listen! It doesn’t take much; all God needs is your yes. When He asks you to move, do it. Do it scared, do it uncertain, do it full of doubt. There will be times where the enemy will try to attack your plans, but you have to keep going. You have to keep preserving. The Bible says, “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. But I have come that you may have life and have it abundantly.” I wanted the life God intended for me, the abundant life. So, no matter what negative thoughts my head was filled with, I did my best to replace it with God’s word.

I have my days where I’m burnt out and need a break. I take those moments to reset, but I get back to it because I have to stick to the plan. I believe those are the times God rewards you the most when He knows you’re tired and don’t want to keep going, but you do it anyway. So, in case anyone was wondering, there’s no actual secret to success but consistency. It’s all God’s work; I’m just following the plan He has for me.

This is not where it ends; it’s truly only the beginning. Trippy tips will be something very large someday. In God’s timing. Until then, and even then, I’m embracing the journey and being grateful for every experience! Working hard so when the time comes, I can be a good steward in what God has called me for.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe nothing worth having is easy. And although I was so eager to start my business, I had no idea the obstacles I would have to overcome. The crazy client stories, the slow seasons, the burnout, the mom guilt from spending so much time working. It has been far from smooth, and I’ve had my attacks from the enemy, but my firm foundation in God is what keeps me rooted.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a Nail Artist, I specialize in acrylic nails, pedicures and nail art! I’m most proud of my resilience in this business; it’s so many other people doing the same thing as you are, but keeping that tunnel vision and knowing what’s for you is what keeps you winning. When I started my business, the first thing I thought of was, “What would set me apart from other people in my field?”

So, I offered snacks and a TV, and what really set it off was offering hookah. When I incorporated hookah into my business, I didn’t know one other person who was doing it! And now I know dozens of people in my state who now offer it with their services. Hair stylist, nail techs, people all over the beauty industry. I like to think I really started the hype if you ask me! When I put hookah on my menu, the girls were going crazy! As much as Atlanta women love hookah, I knew it’d be a hit!

How do you think about luck?
No luck, all hard work and blessings as a result of it!
