Life & Work with Ben Ivey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Ivey.

Ben Ivey

Hi Ben, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Ben Ivey, and I’m an audio engineer based out of Atlanta, Georgia. I first started in audio at my church, growing up and learning with my dad. He taught me a lot of basics about audio and sparked my interest. Later in life, I was in bands playing guitar and singing. However, I realized audio was truly where I wanted to be. Nowadays, I tour in country music and work as a full-time FOH Engineer and mixer at my home studio in ATL.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
HA! Hardly, I’ve failed more times than I can count. The pandemic really killed my business. I had to close to my studio, get off the road, and be home for a full year. It was really rough financially and mentally.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in FOH Mixing. I love touring, traveling the world, and making music with my friends. Work-wise, recently, I got to mix on Jimmy Kimmel and record a performance for the CMT Awards. Those were both things I’ve never had the pleasure of doing and was really exciting.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I would say there’s definitely a right place, right time thing in our business. My advice would be to take as many gigs as you can, watch all YouTube videos on the gear you’re using, and be the best hang.
