Meet Dean Ellis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Ellis.

Dean Ellis

Hi Dean, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
The first moment was a disappointing experience I had as a stylist, working on a local magazine shoot. I vividly remember being told by the owners of a shop that I couldn’t be their client because I wasn’t considered “elite” enough. This experience left a bitter taste in my mouth and fueled my determination to create a space where everyone could feel welcomed and valued, regardless of their background or status.

The second crucial moment was my mother’s unintentional but invaluable tailoring training. Growing up, I watched her work tirelessly on her sewing machine, creating beautiful garments with precision and care. Her passion for tailoring and her dream of owning her own business inspired me to follow in her footsteps and carve out my own path in the world of fashion.

Combining these two key influences – the negative experience as a stylist and my mother’s legacy of craftsmanship and entrepreneurship – I founded Ellis ESQ with a vision of inclusivity, quality, and personalized service. Our brand is built on the belief that everyone deserves to look and feel their best, and we strive to create bespoke pieces that reflect the individuality and style of each client.

How we got where we are today? I guess it depends on who you speak to, as in my eyes, we are still working to carve our space in this industry, while to others, we are on our way to arriving … lol perspective is everything. But I will say this: my faith in God and my relationship with HIM, my determination, resilience, and love for seeing people come alive when dressed in garments that make them feel their absolute best… have aided in the journey to this point.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Just like the garments I create, my journey in this industry has been woven with both smooth seams and bumpy patches. Each challenge I’ve faced has been an opportunity for growth, pushing me to refine my skills and deepen my passion for the art of custom tailoring.

While reflecting on answering these questions, I’ve come to realize that my main obstacles have not been as many external forces but rather internal barriers. It is often my own self-doubt and perception of my abilities that pose the greatest challenge. As I continue down this path, I am learning to confront these obstacles head-on, embracing them as opportunities for self-improvement and personal development.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I understand that articles like this are usually set for us to speak on ourselves or shed light on ourselves… BUT

I must acknowledge that my journey with ELLIS ESQ has not been a solitary one. Along the path that led me to where I am today, there have been many individuals who have inspired, guided and supported me. From mentors who shared their wisdom with me to colleagues who collaborated with me on challenging projects, I am deeply grateful for the influence of each and every one of them.

And so, I would simply like to take this opportunity to thank as many as my mind will allow me to (blame it on my mind, not my heart, if your name is not mentioned…❤️)

First and foremost, GOD… without which nothing would be possible.

Mommy for sharing both her character and gifting

The Daddy & ELLIS Family, who I know were and at times are still unsure of what I was and am doing but support no matter what.

Calvin & Crystal, YOU ALREADY KNOW

When we started, there were key ppl like

– Junior, Natalie Phillip, and Kai Thomas (PhillipEllis… I still love that name… our style agency)

– Artist like Faith Choral, Oniel & Nevon, I think two of the first men to trust me with designing

– I wish I could remember all the names of magazines and shows who gave me opportunities back then

– Shae, Sheila, Jessica D, my forever family who opened doors known and unknown & are now family.

– Pastor O Meikle, who stood in the place as a mentor, but more so taught me business accumen without knowing

– Local Canadian Shops who carried our garments on Queen Street W for many years.

– Pastor Judith, Jo, Court – my round table members…

– Troy Clinton, dynamic stylist and friend, Vanja, FAT, Fashion Week Toronto, Fashion Week NYC, etc.

And since then, every event planner who chooses us as a part of their preferred vendors list to the many photographers who have brought our pieces to life, & to every client who has trusted us with their visions, YOU ARE THE TRUE STARS… To my select alteration clerks located all over, to members of our marketing team over the years, Ty and Travis… Thank you so much to my Mentors, Soks, Mr. Dewdney & Lloyd Boston, who direct me at times, and I don’t even know it… To clients turn friends Eric Johnson, Emmanuel K, Tao, Stefan K, Jamal Sims, Ryan Wright… the list does go on and on. (I can feel myself getting in trouble)

And of course, my friends, those who have had to listen to my complaining, or stressed, etc., and who have also shared with me in successes along the way, even when I didn’t take the time to stop and do so myself, Ton, Nicole, Kevin Brodie, Derrck P, Grace, Tash, Kai again ( God knows you’ve listened lol ) Jasiel my lil brother who has gone from modeling to sales rep lol. Mykal and Mykel… y’all figure it out… lol David B is one of my main muses, and you’ll be hearing more about him soon… but you… To Patrick, you’ve been a friend, a client, and even one of our esquires… Laura, OMG Jessica Parker… YOUUUUUUUU go unmatched, and I am humbled to watch your growth now. Nate, client, friend model, team member… see, I am getting myself in trouble here… I’m running out of room, but the main point is that no Man is an Island… nothing created well is created alone.

My only consolation is that, when this gets posted most ppl will like and move on, they probably won’t read it, so I should be good.

I am humbled for the opportunity for this interview, but more than that, I am humbled that I get to serve so many in making them feel amazing about themselves.

I am honored to be able to share my experiences and insights with the readers of this magazine, and I hope that my words inspire others to appreciate the beauty and artistry of custom tailoring. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to reflect on my journey and the individuals who have accompanied me along the way.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
The goal was always to be a lawyer… Initially there was no plan on fashion at all, education etc. was all directed towards being a lawyer… then one Journal entry in my mom’s bible created the SHIFT and I’m glad I never turned back.
