Rising Stars: Meet Matt Odom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Odom.

Matt Odom

Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I began my photography career as a wedding photographer, honing my skills in capturing special moments. My big break into commercial photography came when local Macon Magazine noticed my work and featured me. This exposure led to opportunities with major clients like Google and ESPN. The pinnacle of my early career was getting a project with National Geographic in 2017, which significantly boosted my profile and propelled my career to new heights in the commercial photography industry.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Breaking into commercial photography was a tough journey, especially coming from a small town. The limited resources and lack of networking opportunities meant I had to work extra hard to make a name for myself. I invested countless hours honing my skills, building a diverse portfolio, and leveraging social media to reach a wider audience. Traveling to larger cities for workshops and shoots was necessary to gain exposure and learn from industry professionals. Despite the challenges, the experience taught me resilience and the importance of persistence in pursuing my passion. It’s something I tell everyone who asks me about how to break into the industry. It’s down to how much you want it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in several areas of photography, including portraiture, sports portraiture, architectural photography, and TV set photography. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills in capturing the essence and character of individuals through portraiture, catching moments of intensity and emotion in sports portraiture and game photography, and highlighting the intricate details and grandeur of architectural structures and design. Additionally, my experience extends to the dynamic environment of television, where I am capturing the behind-the-scenes moments of television shows and movies. It’s been a privilege to be recognized for my work, including being named one of Architectural Digest’s top photographers in the South, a recognition that motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of my craft. I believe my attention to detail and the ability to make quick adjustments while remaining creative help me push my limits as a photographer.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite books are “PhotoWorks: Forty Photographers on Process and Practice,” Fred Herzog: Modern Color, Magnum Contact Sheets, Best Business Practices For Photographers, and As We Rise. Gordon Parks: American Gothic.
