Inspiring Conversations with Terrell Holmes of Ripped With Rell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrell Holmes.

Hi Terrell, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’m from Harlem, New York, where my ardor for fitness has always burned bright. At the tender age of 16, I embarked on a journey to fortify both my inner resilience and physical strength. Initially, my foray into the realm of training was a familial affair, as I assisted friends and kin in initiating their own wellness quests. Yet, my academic pursuit led me down a different path—I pursued and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology.

Following my collegiate endeavors, I delved into the traditional post-graduate route, opting for an internship program. Enrolling in the Disney College Program for marketing seemed promising, but the subsequent job search didn’t unfold as anticipated. Instead of lucrative opportunities, I found myself navigating through temporary gigs that barely sustained my existence in the bustling metropolis of NYC. To alleviate some financial strain, I secured a part-time position at a gym, initially intending to work at the front desk.

However, fate had other plans. Upon glimpsing my physique, the manager saw potential in me as a trainer. Despite my reservations, I took the leap, albeit with doubts lingering about the viability of a career in fitness versus the allure of the tech industry. Yet, as I immersed myself in training, I discovered an unforeseen passion and a viable source of income. It dawned on me—fitness was not just a pursuit but my true calling, resonating with every fiber of my being.

In a serendipitous turn of events, a recruiter from Equinox approached me within six months of my part-time endeavor, offering a full-time personal trainer position at their new location in Equinox Gramercy. The prospect of a six-figure salary sealed the deal, affirming my transition into the fitness realm. Over the next five years at Equinox, I thrived, earning accolades such as Top 100 Equinox Trainer for consecutive years and being the top performer at my club.

However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed an unprecedented challenge. With my clientele dwindling from 44 to a mere 5, I knew I needed to pivot. Relocating to Atlanta, where opportunities beckoned, proved to be a strategic move. Landing a position at Lifetime Fitness, I wasted no time in making an impact—I was named Sandy Springs Lifetime Fitness Employee of the Month after recruiting 22 clients within my first month.

Today, as a founding trainer at Lifetime Buckhead, I reflect on the journey that led me here—years of perseverance, hard work, and unwavering dedication. From stay-at-home parents to CEOs, athletes, and celebrities, I now empower individuals from all walks of life to realize their fitness aspirations, embodying the belief that passion, coupled with determination, can transform dreams into reality.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve faced trials and tribulations along the way, particularly when I made the switch from pursuing a career in tech to becoming a full-time personal trainer. It required significant life adjustments, and my mom wasn’t initially thrilled with my decision. However, I understood her concern; she simply wanted what was best for me, even though she couldn’t foresee what this career change would entail.

Entering the high-end market of personal training was daunting. I was unfamiliar with catering to such clientele, but thankfully, the PT managers at the time were exceptionally skilled and guided me to become the professional I am today.

Then came the curveball of COVID-19. It felt like my career hit its peak, only to come crashing down. I experienced a period of depression and mental instability. Fortunately, my financial situation was stable, providing a crucial support during this turbulent time. Despite the setback, I decided to relocate to Atlanta with my girlfriend.

Despite thriving in Atlanta initially, I was hit with another blow: the end of an 8-year relationship. The breakup took a toll on me, and within six months of moving, I found myself readjusting to life as a single person. Amidst this emotional turmoil, I also faced the loss of my grandmother, my personal superhero. It plunged me into a dark space, but through it all, I persevered, continuing to work and fight through the challenges life threw my way.
