Hi Raquel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I founded An Officer and Gentlewoman, LLC (AOAGWLLC) in 2011 after serving nine years in the U.S. Army. My journey in media and entertainment began with a desire to leverage my experiences and skills to create a platform that bridges various facets of the industry, including Public Relations, Talent Management, Brand Management, and Production services. Over the years, AOAGWLLC has facilitated over 2,500 client appearances, showcasing our commitment to excellence and our extensive reach in the industry.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. One of the significant challenges I faced was the loss of my mother to suicide in 2013, which was a deeply personal and difficult experience. Balancing the demands of growing a business while coping with such a profound loss required resilience and strength. Additionally, breaking into the media and entertainment industry as a Veteran and woman of color came with its own set of obstacles, including overcoming stereotypes and gaining recognition in a competitive field. Despite these struggles, my military background instilled in me a sense of perseverance and discipline, which has been instrumental in navigating these challenges and driving AOAGWLLC to success.

For those just starting out, my advice is to stay resilient and patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and there will be obstacles along the way. One thing I wish I knew when I was starting out is the importance of building a strong network. Connections and relationships are crucial in any industry, so invest time in networking and finding mentors who can guide you.
Additionally, always stay true to your values and vision. It’s easy to get swayed by trends or external pressures, but your authenticity is what will set you apart and drive long-term success. Lastly, don’t be afraid to take risks and embrace failures as learning opportunities. Each setback is a chance to grow and refine your approach. Keep pushing forward with dedication and confidence, and you will find your path to success.
