Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Cynthia M Davis.
Hi Dr. Davis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Through unplanned, unexpected, and surprising circumstances, which I have absolutely no regrets; I found myself raising three children as a single parent. It was time to make some awesome lemonade out of the bitter lemon’s life had presented me. Only my faith in God would be what I needed to begin this journey, thrive while raising my children as a single parent, and grow myself through the process.
Renewing my teaching license, obtaining a teaching position, and tutoring was the path on which I was led to provide the finances to help provide for my children. After teaching for several years, I realized that my love for teaching was true and deep. While teaching I also realized my passion for talking with students who were in need of having a mentor and someone to encourage them to use the gifts within them for good was growing deeper as well. I was passionate about the growth and development of not only myself and my children but also of others.
Renewing my teaching license was step one. Secondly, I renewed my real estate license. Changing career paths allowed me the opportunity to better provide for my children. After working several years as a real estate salesperson, I obtained by broker’s license and opened my own real estate brokerage. At this time, I realized I had not changed careers. I would find myself following the same passion of teaching, training, and help other agents grow both professionally and personally.
Realizing that teaching was burning even deeper in me, so I obtained my real estate instructor’s license and began to teach others who wanted to obtain their real estate license and opened my own real estate school. From there, I began to teach aspiring brokers and continuing education courses. Soon, I began to write my own courses and have them approved by the Real Estate Commission. The cycle of teaching and empowering others with light and value to help them grow, move forward, and prosper in life continued.
Desiring more tools and an established platform to be able to utilize as I continue to add value to others, I became a certified John Maxwell Teacher, Trainer, and Coach. Indeed, obtaining the certification and having these valuable resources is helping me be able to further my desire to add value to others personally, professionally, and spiritually. This move led me to open another business, The Enlightenment Institute.
Additionally, I teach biblical studies and write biblical teachings. As well, I speak for women organizations, have served as a minister, and teach others how to teach. My life is one of giving of myself and experiences to other and always being mindful to be a light for others and help them move forward five minutes at a time.
One statement I often say is “Take your journey five minutes at a time, if necessary, because taking it one day at a time can sometimes be overwhelming.” So, how I have gotten where I am today is by keeping in mind my five minutes at a time process, growing deeper in my spiritual walk with God, and by being intentional about making sure that I keep growing and moving forward personally. On purpose, I pass these truths to my now adult children, of whom I am very proud.
Becoming more comfortable with myself and giving myself permission to not hold back, to develop and use my gifts and talents, and to contribute good in helping the world be a better place by helping others grow, thrive, and move forward in life, makes the lemons I once considered to be bitter now I consider them to have been sweet all along.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am not sure what a smooth road looks like, but I can honestly say that I have had an enormous amount of success, but they have appeared in visual form through and after struggles. Financial struggles were often present along my path. Regardless of often not being able to fully satisfy my financial obligations, somehow, we always had what we needed.
There were times in my life when I considered being a black female business owner through the mindset of it being an obstacle I had to overcome. Wisdom has taught me that thought is only true if I believe it to be so and live by that belief. Instead, believing that being a black female business owner is a blessing and standing on that truth no longer allows me the space to get caught up in the disadvantages that others might see being a black female business owner as. Changing my perspective allows me to see differently. Going deeper within the Wellsprings of life within me always provides me with the clarity, the creativity, and the ability to achieve what is mine, even if it comes through obstacles and challenges.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
