Meet Sofia Ocampo of Events by Sofia in Brookhaven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Ocampo.

Sofia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Events by Sofia was born in Washington, DC one month after my own “Mexican-Jewish fiesta” themed wedding. I had experience with planning while working at Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX and at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Washington, DC – but was excited about exploring the world of social celebrations and wedding planning definitely proved to be a whole new ballgame.

It all happened incredibly quickly, there was no time to over-think the decision. We had just gotten back from our honeymoon, when I saw a post in a professional networking group that I belonged to. A bride was looking for an affordable wedding planner and I thought, “It’s now or never”. I nervously wrote her an e-mail, explaining that while I had a lot of event planning experience, I was just starting out as an actual wedding planner. We met in person, hit it off and all of a sudden, I had committed to plan a wedding and work alongside this couple for the next 13 months. I will always be grateful to them for giving me a chance! I didn’t even have a business name, contracts, business cards, etc.

Fast forward to today, I’m so thankful that Events by Sofia was able to establish itself in Atlanta, GA and give me the opportunity to continue doing what I love here. It truly is a blessing!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not – for the same reasons mentioned above, the learning curve was steep at first. Also, starting over in a new state was challenging, I didn’t know anyone in the industry and I had to rebuild my entire network, all while navigating the first few years of motherhood. However, I’ve been so lucky to connect with other local vendors, who definitely embody the ideal of “collaboration over competition” and “women helping women”.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Events by Sofia – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Events by Sofia is a boutique wedding and event planning company, specializing in multicultural celebrations. One of my passions, is helping clients incorporate their unique backgrounds and traditions into their event, in the hopes of creating something unique and true to them. I’m also fluent in Spanish and therefore can offer my services to anyone seeking a bilingual planner.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m still constantly amazed at all this city and its surroundings have to offer. When we first moved here (almost four years ago), I started a list of venues, vendors, classes, street murals, etc that I wanted to visit, explore and meet. Instead of shrinking, the list continues to grow! So, I look forward to continuing this exploration, in the hopes of serving my clients to the best of my ability.
