Meet Ren Lowe of Brown Unicorn Publishing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ren Lowe.

Ren Lowe

Hi Ren , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I fell in love with writing at the early of 9 years old. Writing helped me express my feelings, and also allowed me to create worlds that I could get lost in for hours.

I was inspired by legends such as Maya Angelou & Langston Hughes. I fell in love with their poetry at an early age, a young girl still in elementary school.

I more books that I read, the more I wanted to write. I was apart of my school’s journalism team in high school and became published at the early age of 15 when I won my first writing competition.

Although writing was my passion and I knew I wanted to publish my own books one day, my gift of singing overshadowed my passion for writing, and at the encouragement of every around me I pursued a career in music instead.

I went to college and pursued a degree in Music Performance in Voice. I toured with stage plays singing and acting, and I even performed at The Legendary Apollo Theatre.

But no matter how much I pursued a career in music, it didn’t seem to want have anything to do with me.

So… I got a 9-5. I worked as a manager in the wireless telecommunications industry, and even though I still pursued writing and recording music. The desire to fulfill my childhood dream of writing and publishing a children’s book lingered in my mind.

While on Maternity leave during the pandemic in 2020 is when I finally decided that I would not squander anymore time hoping and wishing to write a children’s book, I made up my mind that I was going to do it!

I began to research the steps to self publishing and quickly found it to be quite overwhelming trying to research this on my own.

Luckily, I would meet my mentor Crystal Swain Bates, who would teach me everything I needed to know about professionally self publishing my children’s books.

I went on to self publish 7 of my children’s books within 60 days. That was in October of 2020. I’m really proud that I was able to publish these books with my at the time 7 year old daughter

Fast forward to today, I have published over 30 titles, and started my own Publishing Agency, Brown Unicorn Publishing, where I offer self publishing coaching services for aspiring authors in addition to offering different book publishing packages.

I am not a full time Author and I have assisted over 200 individuals on their self publishing journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s has not always been an easy road. Self publishing is no small feat. Learning how to be confident as an author one was of my biggest struggles. Some refer to it as imposter syndrome. How could I expect for people to be confident in my work and want to purchase my books if I didn’t truly own that I was an Author and not just someone that had written a book.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
