Conversations with Caleb Wallace

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Wallace.

Caleb Wallace

Hi Caleb , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Caleb Wallace, I am a 23-year-old artist. I specialize in painting with a focus on minimalism and color theory. The style of work that I do falls under hard-edge painting with mixed media materials alongside the use of collage paper. Outside of painting, I am a part of a sound production/musical group by the name of “Itsokaytobepretty”. We are a group of four, and we have recently released our third studio album earlier this year.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an independent artist is not a smooth ride. It is a very challenging game to play. There are a lot of hands to shake and elbows to rub. It’s a “who you know” kind of game. You also have to be able to market yourself properly and have the proper things set up for yourself, which can be expensive and extensive. Other important things to include are constantly making new works and knowing what is good work. As well as knowing what to put out/release. I have also found it important to not take most things personally and to remove envy from your mindset. It can be challenging to see other artists thrive when you have put in just as much work or even more than others and find yourself not exactly where you want to be or behind. But that is okay because sometimes you have to put in more work than others whether you like it or not, and whether people will admit how easy they have had it playing this game. Just keep working and don’t stop. Because if you stop, then you lose.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a visual artist and musician. My visual art is hyper-focused on mass media censorship and capitalism. I believe that the current state of the world that we are in is very profit-driven, and controlled as well. I’m able to express this with the use of solid color bars and use of mixed media. In regards to music, I work with a group called “Itsokaytobepretty.” We are a multi-faceted musical production group that is currently working on our third studio album. What I would like for myself would be to get into some shows within the next year or two and possibly some residencies if possible. For the music, I would like for our album(s) to get some type of placement under a publishing deal.
