Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Brown.
Sheri, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In the summer of 2003, I was at a crossroads in my life. I had recently ended an abusive marriage, the stress of which had caused me to overeat and gain over 100 pounds. I knew I was ready for a fresh start – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I started a new diet and also enrolled in meditation and psychic development classes. I knew something had to change in my life and I was seeking answers for whatever it was that would keep me out of the place I found myself in. I did not have all the answers, but as a natural intuitive, I always had a connection with the divine that would lead me on the right path. I was very involved in prayer, meditation, changing my thoughts, you name it, and I was willing to at least read about it.
In the beginning, my spiritual journey had nothing to do with my physical journey. I treated them as separate endeavors. However, as my spiritual journey progressed, I could feel the universe calling me towards energy work, meditation, yoga and lifestyle that had to be as one. As the mental clutter began to shed so did the pounds. At this point, I was doing psychic readings and energy healings as supplemental income to my housekeeping business, but I knew absolutely nothing about the physical aspect of healing the physical part of the body balanced the mind. I had promised the divine that I would follow my intuition completely that year and had a dream that I was to go to massage school to further my healing work. Through my coursework at the massage school, I began to realize the connection between the mind, body, and soul. I could see how releasing a muscle on a client could often lead to an emotional release as well. I could feel where when someone was blocked energetically could manifest itself as tightness in their body. It was a surreal experience, and made me value the connect and how important it is to live a balanced lifestyle. I began taking better care of my body, and primarily through a healthy diet I was able to shed the extra weight. I felt better than ever.
However, after working with my clients and seeing the benefits of exercise on the body, I decided to add fitness routine to health plan. There was one problem, though – I absolutely loathed going to the gym. I struggled to go every day despite hiring a personal trainer and paying for a monthly membership. However, I absolutely loved going to the local park by the river near my home every day. I could run for miles around the paths, basking in the sunshine and letting the wind caress my face. I felt calmer, more relaxed and more rejuvenated than I ever felt on a treadmill. I felt that being there was not only good for my body but good for my soul. I wanted all exercise to bring me that same feeling. I had gone to yoga classes in the gym and really enjoyed it. I started reading up on yoga and both its spiritual and physical aspects and on a whim went to Bali to get my yoga certification. I haven’t looked back since.
The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit root word ‘yuj’, which means ‘unity’. Yoga is about bringing balance to the mind, body, and soul. This was how I encountered my yogic practice in Indonesia. However, when I returned to the United States, I found that almost all yoga studios seemed to focus purely on the physical aspects, or asana, of yoga. I wanted a space that could provide both, as I had experienced in Bali. That’s when I decided that if I could not find it here in Atlanta, I would create my own. And that’s how Enerchi Yoga was born. My daughter, Adrianna and I are co-founding the studio. She is helping design classes to appeal to the technology savvy millennial yogis. We are creating a yoga class that will feel like a life coach session with a workout. Morning classes will focus on affirmations, lighting, breathing, aromatherapy and poses that boost your energy and confidence. This routine will connect the best of what I have learned as an energy healer and yogi to balance your mind and body. Evening classes will focus on relaxing, reflecting and rejuvenating, and will incorporate all the senses just as the morning class.
Enerchi is a portmanteau between ‘energy’ and ‘chi’. ‘Chi’ in Chinese medicine is the universal life force energy within our body, while the term ‘energy’ in Western culture often invokes strength of body, of ‘get up and go’. Our goal at Enerchi is to create a space where people can find a balance between body and soul, and a one-stop shop where even in the day-to-day grind, our clients can find peace and harmony as they prepare to take on the world. We’re excited to share our practice with everyone. Namaste Y’all.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have had to work my butt off! I have three grown children now, but at the time I was raising them and raising myself. I went to college as a working single mother, and I can proudly say, “We did it!” As a family, we all had to work hard and make sacrifices. My two older children have already graduated college, my son, Chase has a masters from UGA, my daughter Adrianna, has an engineering degree from GA. Tech. My youngest Alyssa is not finished with school yet, and she does pet sitting until then.
Who, or what, deserves a lot of credit for where you are today?
I have met so many incredible people that have either guided me or inspired me to keep growing, learning and expanding. The most significant factors have been my clients! My clients need keep me seeking answers and researching.
What type of clients or projects do you look forward to most?
I enjoy working with clients who really want to shift patterns, whether the body, the spirit or the mind. Each is so important for contentment and true change, that to work on one, greatly affects the other. Very easy to see in the mind-body connection, where when pain is resolved, depression lifts.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I would have practiced listening with the pure intention of hearing more. It would have helped me see many things earlier. In the end, it was the way it needed to be.
