Today we’d like to introduce you to Jiayi Chen
Hi Jiayi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey as a designer commenced at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where I delved deep into the realm of user experience innovation for mobility solutions. Throughout my time at SCAD, I dedicated myself to exploring various facets of transportation design, from electric trucks to hovercraft and aircraft cabin interiors. This passion for redefining user experiences in transportation was nurtured by the knowledge and skills I acquired during my studies at SCAD, laying the foundation for my career in design.
Upon graduating from SCAD, I embarked on a professional journey that eventually led me to Toyota North America, where I am currently based. My transition to Toyota North America marked a significant milestone in my career, allowing me to continue my pursuit of innovative design in the automotive industry. Here, I have had the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking projects that push the boundaries of automotive design and user experience.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the key challenges I’ve faced in my journey as a designer is navigating the complexities of designing user interfaces that adhere to stringent design specifications, particularly when dealing with intricate dimensions and requirements. In my pursuit of creating intuitive and visually appealing user experiences, I’ve delved deep into the exploration of design standards and guidelines, constantly seeking innovative approaches to meet evolving user needs.
Furthermore, as a designer committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation, I recognize the importance of staying abreast of emerging trends and technologies. Designing for the future requires a forward-thinking mindset and a willingness to adapt to changing landscapes. This necessitates continuous exploration and experimentation, as well as a proactive approach to incorporating cutting-edge advancements into design practices.
By embracing these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, I’ve been able to elevate my design capabilities and deliver solutions that not only meet current standards but also anticipate future demands. Through strategic problem-solving and a commitment to innovation, I strive to ensure that my designs remain relevant and impactful in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

One of my most significant achievements as a designer is the development of an innovative design application for the Mukden Palace Museum, which leverages mixed reality technology to offer visitors a more immersive and engaging exploration of exhibits. This groundbreaking project, inspired by my passion for innovative design and user experience, has garnered recognition and accolades, including the prestigious A’ Design Award. Through this project, I have had the opportunity to showcase my creativity and expertise in creating transformative user experiences.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
In addition to my own perseverance and dedication, I attribute much of my growth and success as a designer to the support and encouragement of various individuals in my life. My university professors at SCAD played a pivotal role in shaping my design acumen, providing invaluable guidance and mentorship that laid the foundation for my career.
Moreover, my colleagues in the professional realm have been instrumental in fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation, challenging me to constantly push the boundaries of my creativity and expertise. Their collective insights and experiences have enriched my own approach to design, inspiring me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my work.
Above all, I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my partner, Zoey Zhou. Her unwavering encouragement and belief in my abilities have been a constant source of strength and motivation, propelling me forward even in the face of challenges. Her presence in my life serves as a reminder of the importance of having a strong support system, and I am fortunate to have her by my side as I continue to pursue my passion for design.
