Today we’d like to introduce you to Gustavo Castillo Jr
Hi Gustavo , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started when I was a child and my parents gifted me a camcorder one summer and from that moment forward I was captivated. I would film countless skits with my friends and family, and then edit them on our old family laptop. I would then showcase these videos to anyone who would watch. I remember being consumed by this new hobby of mine and I could not get enough of it. However, as I grew older and entered high school I drifted away from this passion.
It wasn’t until college that I realized that I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I had a creative drive, but I never considered pursuing a creative career path. Frustrated with myself and unsure about my purpose in life I decided to drop out of college to take some time to reflect. During my hiatus I unexpectedly landed a position as a Production Assistant on a feature film. During this experience I had realized that filmmaking and storytelling is what I was meant to do.
Inspired by my time on set, I bought a cheap camera and took the next several months learning everything I could about photography and filmmaking. I practiced every opportunity I had. I was once again hooked. Now, 2 years later, I’m still motivated & passionate, continuously working to grow my business and make my mark within the creative industry. I have finally found my path as Midnight Visuals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has been far from easy, presenting its own set of challenges, but nothing that can stop me. Each obstacle is just another opportunity to overcome. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, but I ensure I never make the same mistake twice. Sharing my art also comes with its own insecurities; since my art is an extension of myself, it feels like sharing a piece of me with the world, which can be daunting at times. I didn’t sign up for an easy path, but I’m grateful for the ups and downs and the growth they bring.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in photography and cinematography, and in the community, I’m known as Midnight Visuals. While I primarily work within the music, fashion, and portraiture spaces, I have experience in various fields of photography/cinematography. My signature style is a dark, grunge aesthetic, evident throughout my work. I also have a unique affinity for nighttime, which I incorporate into my art through shadows, heavy contrast, and distinctively dark elements. Regardless of the project, my objective is always to bring my client’s vision to life.
I am most proud of my growth and my willingness to learn, and what sets me apart is the unique perspective I bring to my artwork, shaped by my own experiences.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Atlanta is full of talent and life at every corner, and it feels like everyone has a dream they want to accomplish. It’s a wonderful environment to be a part of, filled with stories waiting to be told.
However, I would say my least favorite thing is most definitely the traffic without a doubt!
