Community Highlights: Meet Jasmine Coleman-Miller of After Ours

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Coleman-Miller

Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Firstly, thank you for featuring me again. It’s truly an honor. I have always been considered the go-to person in every aspect of my life whether that’s work, family, or friends. People know when they come to me they get result and over the years I began to develop it into a business. I’m so introverted that everytime people learn what I can do they tell me I should be getting paid for it, so I finally took their advice and started charging.

Outside of that I’m a Mom, and creative. I loveeeee learning new things. I’m a repository of (random) knowledge and if you ask me a question, I’ll probably already know the answer or can get it to you quickly (it’s a gift and a curse honestly.)

So that’s how I got here: I wanted to create something that allowed me to help creatives by providing them with the support and resources they need to thrive.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it took me over 10 years to get here because imposter syndrome is real. It took me a long time to believe in my skills and abilities and I am finally happy I did. Growing a business isn’t for the faint of heart and you’ll experience new challenges every day. You just have to keep pushing through.

As you know, we’re big fans of After Ours. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At After Ours, we’re not just your average business – we’re a passion project fueled by our love for uplifting and empowering artists, especially those from underrepresented communities. As a Black-woman-owned and operated agency, we totally get the unique challenges that artists of color face, and we’re all about providing the support and resources they need to shine brightly.

What makes us stand out is our personalized approach and our total dedication to our clients’ success. We’re not just here to offer services – we’re here to be your partners every step of the way on your artistic journey, helping you bring your visions to life and reach your goals. Our boutique size means we can give you the kind of attention and support that bigger agencies just can’t match.

Personally, I’m so proud of how we help our clients not only grow as artists but also develop killer brands that create a real impact on culture and communities. Seeing them thrive and succeed fills us with so much joy and drives our passion for what we do.

Sure, building a business in this competitive industry has had its challenges. We’ve faced our fair share of obstacles, from navigating industry complexities to breaking through biases and stereotypes. But each hurdle has only made us tougher and more determined to make it.

One of the most important things we’ve learned is the power of resilience and perseverance. No matter how tough things get, we never lose sight of our mission and our belief in the incredible impact of art. We’ve also realized the importance of staying true to our values and creating a welcoming, inclusive space for our clients and our team.

In the end, we want you to know that After Ours is more than just an agency – we’re a tight-knit community committed to empowering artists and helping them soar to new heights. Our journey is all about passion, perseverance, and the firm belief that with the right support and resources, the sky’s the limit.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Good luck has often presented itself in the form of unexpected opportunities and lifelong connections. such as me meeting my business partner, Tati. We met through a mutual friend at a photoshoot I was doing and clicked from day one. Additionally, discovering incredibly talented individuals at just the right moment—artists whose careers took off and brought significant recognition to the agency—felt like the universe aligning in my favor.

On the flip side, bad luck has not been a stranger. There have been instances where promising deals fell through due to unforeseen circumstances, or when biases and systemic barriers presented significant hurdles. As a Black woman, I’ve faced discrimination and skepticism that others might not have encountered, which at times felt like a streak of bad luck working against me. However, each setback has also been a learning opportunity, teaching resilience, adaptability, and the importance of advocating for oneself and one’s community.

In the broader scope, luck—good and bad—has underscored the importance of perseverance and preparation. Good luck can open doors, but it’s the hard work and readiness to seize those opportunities that make the difference. Bad luck, while discouraging, has reinforced my determination to break through barriers and create a more inclusive and equitable industry.

Ultimately, luck has played a dual role in my life and business. It has both challenged and uplifted me, shaping a narrative that is rich with lessons and growth.
