Check Out Yared Negash’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yared Negash

Yared, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ethiopian Sport Federation in North America (ESFNA) was established in 1984 as a nonprofit organization in the state of California. We’ve been hosting annual tournaments for the past 41 years using soccer as the main sport to bring Ethiopians from all over the world. Our mission and motto is “Bringing Ethiopians Together “ ESFNA started with four teams in 1984 in Houston and it now has 32 teams from all over us and Canada. Our teams are divided into two groups 1st division and 2nd division and these teams play a highly competitive game throughout the week to be crowned champions at the end. We also celebrate “Ethiopian Day” on the Friday before the end of the tournament where we celebrate the beautiful, unique and diverse culture we have with cultural music and dance to showcase for Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been smooth. There have been times where our existence has been tested and because of our community and the support we got our people we were able to pass that stage and stand to celebrate our 41st anniversary

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
ESFNA drives year after year continuing our work to bring Ethiopians together. We have vendors that sell food, artifacts and merchandise as well as nonprofit organizations that come to take advantage of the gathering. This annual event brings people together from all walks of life to celebrate their culture and to reunite with their fellow countrymen.
