Life & Work with Andrew Lomax

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Lomax.

Andrew Lomax

Hi Andrew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
If I could pinpoint a moment in my life that led me to where I am today it would be 17-year-old me digging my father’s clippers out of the closet and cutting my own hair off for the first time, after years of growth. I went to school the next day with a patchy haircut, the result of my not knowing what I was doing. Nobody clowned me (to my face) but everyone who inquired was shocked I cut my hair.

My confidence was built up to continue cutting my hair and getting better at it. That led me to cut one of my best friend’s hair and etch his jersey number in his hair with the clippers. I was solidified by a couple of classmates as a barber and I never looked back. While serving in the military for 11 years, I often had to cut my own hair to maintain military standards.

Once people caught wind that I was cutting my own hair, they wanted me to give them haircuts too. I had people stopping by my living quarters before and after work and at the start of the weekend to get a haircut. I ran into a few other military members throughout my career who cut hair and they motivated me to get even more serious about my hustle and craft.

Martez Hawkins, Reggie Thompson, Xavier Brown, and finally Josh Walker gave me the push I needed. I decided to leave the military after 11 years of active duty service to pursue my career as a professional licensed barber. That journey was amazing and it has given me so many life lessons. I will go into further details when I release the book I’m writing about empowering people who want to follow a dream.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been smooth at times and other times, not so much. One challenge I faced was moving from San Antonio, Texas to Atlanta Georgia, leaving the last four years of hard work and dedication, all of my loyal clients, family, and friends behind to completely start over. I left my home in St. Louis, Missouri 17 years ago and have lived all over the world.

Each time I leave a place I have lived in and called home to start over in a new city/state/country, it provides me with a multitude of experiences. I’ve learned that although I have plenty of experience relocating, some aspects of moving and starting over never get easier. So I take the good with the bad and keep my faith in Jesus as I go through the challenges. Every time I’ve done that, things work out for the better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional barber and a creative mind. I specialize in building and maintaining self-confidence in those who desire to live a more fulfilling lifestyle. I’m known for my motto “It’s not just a haircut, it’s a VIBE!” This means that anyone I cut, they are not just in the chair for a haircut but a life-changing experience.

I can say most of my clients have become friends and associates who value their time in the chair because I’m going to do everything in my power to pull out the best version of themselves in every way, shape, and form, starting with their haircut but not stopping there. That’s what sets me apart from other barbers, I’m not in it for the money, I’m in it to serve the people. I’m in it to build people up and set people up for success in life after they leave my chair.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I believe that everyone in the world has something to offer the world. It’s my job to use my gifts to help people look, feel, and live their best while sharing their gifts with the world around them. EL-OH means Everyday Love Over Hate, something we all can live by. Choosing everyday, simple forms of love instead of choosing to hate in any capacity can literally change your world and the world!
