Life & Work with Tyler James of Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler James

Hi Tyler, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve wanted to be an actor and model ever since I was a child. As I got older though, I placed a lot of value of having a job that would offer immediate financial security and stability. I knew I wanted a career in business, so accounting just kind of fell into my lap. The knowledge and level of detail that’s required to be an accountant came easy for me, so I got degrees in Accounting and Finance, and started my career as an auditor at a Big 4 accounting firm.

Fast forward a few years, I was scouted by a reputable agency in Atlanta, Forward the Agency, for their fashion and print divisions. I eventually transitioned into their TV and film division as well because I really enjoy doing both. So far, I’ve done a few modeling gigs, and my acting career is still a work in progress. I’ve been enrolled in classes for almost a year now, and I know I’ll be in front of the camera very soon!

One thing that’s always been consistent in my life is my love for fashion. I recently began investing more time and energy into growing my social media platforms with fashion content, modeling behind-the-scenes, and some lifestyle content as well. I’m currently casting a wide net, and I want my social media platforms to reflect all of the progress I’ve made along the way (and some fashion inspo too!)

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m very grateful that my agency found me and saw potential because finding the right agency can be an uphill battle sometimes. That part felt easy. However, my main struggle is balancing my 9-5 and the demands of auditions and castings. For example, sometimes I’ll have a busy work day, with calls from 9AM – 11AM, and then an audition due at 12PM. It can be difficult to switch from “Corporate Accountant” mode to “Working Actor” mode, but I’m learning that planning and preparation in advance goes a long way.

With acting and modeling, the more you put in it, the more you get out of it. It can be frustrating knowing that if I had more time to dedicate and invest in my career, then I could potentially be a lot further along. However, I’m learning to trust the process!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m working on quite a few things. One of my main priorities at the moment is content creation. I’ve always loved fashion, and it goes hand and hand with my modeling background. I’m currently trying to blend my creative endeavors together— modeling, acting, fashion, etc. and showcase that through Instagram posts, reels, and TikToks. If you go to my Instagram, you’ll see a lot of OOTDs and modeling content. I’d love to work with some of my favorite brands too.

I think what truly sets me apart is being able to pivot between different careers and creative outlets without compromising quality. I think it takes skill to have several things going on at once and giving all of it your absolute best. One thing I’ve learned though is that acting, modeling, and content creation is not for the weak. You have to get used to rejection because it’s a part of the industry. It also takes nerve because your content (casting materials, audition tapes, social media content, etc.) is being consumed by a bunch of strangers. I’m trying to give myself a little grace and not spread myself too thin to avoid getting burnt out. I do love sharing my progress though!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I was definitely more risk-adverse in the past. I have never been a fan of risk taking, but recently I’ve decided that it’s holding me back. In order to reach a certain level of success, you must take risks to obtain a greater reward.
