Daily Inspiration: Meet Xinyu Zhang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xinyu Zhang

Hi Xinyu, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello! My name is Xinyu Zhang, an interior designer specializing in multi-family design. I aspire to transition into hotel design soon. After earning my MFA in Interior Design from SCAD, I decided to stay in the U.S. to pursue my career. I love challenges and exploring the unknown, which is why I’m passionate about interior design—it keeps life exciting!

The best part of my job is getting to know my clients and their spaces through each project. Every design review helps me create a space that’s not only beautiful but also a perfect fit for the client. Solving design challenges and surprising clients with creative solutions is incredibly satisfying.

Interior design isn’t just a career for me—it’s my dream. I’m excited to bring more beauty and joy into people’s lives through my work!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As part of a team working on large projects, I need to communicate every design detail with other teams and clients. Sometimes, a design we consider perfect has to be simplified to accommodate the needs of other teams. When this happens, I strive to negotiate with other teams to gain their support while adapting our design to still retain its core essence. It’s not always possible to keep our most preferred design intact, which presents a significant challenge for me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Regarding my work, the aspect I am most proud of is the exploration of the unique regional culture of each project location. This ability is closely related to my cultural background. Every time I start a new project, I focus on studying the local history and culture. These elements are the foundation of the city and the reason why people live there. By uncovering these unique cultural characteristics, I believe that interior designs based on them can create a stronger connection between the space and its occupants.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my fondest childhood memories is discovering my love for interior design. It all started when I was in middle school. I would spend hours flipping through interior design magazines, captivated by the beautiful homes and elegant furniture. I remember creating little floor plans and decorating imaginary spaces in my mind.
My best memory is visiting a furniture store with my mother while we were shopping for our new home. I would eagerly explore every corner, touching fabrics, examining textures, and imagining how different pieces would fit together in a room. Those early experiences sparked a passion in me that has only grown stronger over the years.
Looking back, I realize that my natural curiosity and fascination with design were the first steps on my journey to becoming an interior designer. These memories remind me why I love what I do and inspire me to keep creating beautiful, meaningful spaces.
