Inspiring Conversations with Nicole Ellison of Scrubs By Nikki: Luxury Skincare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Ellison

Hi Nicole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“Scrubs By Nikki is a small black owned business! I have a love for skincare and natural products!

Everyday I am formulating new ideas to bring to you all. Nothing is like homemade.

I strive to make each batch for our products with love and care. This is why I do everything in small fresh batches for each turn around, trust us it’s worth the wait!

Our CEO, Nikki, has had her own personal battles with dry skin. Finding “all natural” Shea butters, body oils and scrubs from the local stores was not cutting it for her anymore! They did not work and they where over expensive! Also they all were boring and dull.

So, I began formulating/testing my own recipes for scrubs and body butters and is here to share that love for nourishing skin with you all! All products are my own recipes!

The vibrant colors are to show you that skincare can be fun and beautiful for everyone.”

May 29th, 2024 marked a year for my business and I can not wait to see how much more growth I have!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a skincare entrepreneur comes with a unique set of challenges. Here are some common struggles that entrepreneurs in the skincare industry often face:

Product Development:
Formulation Challenges: Creating effective, safe, and stable formulations can be complex, requiring extensive research and development.

Ingredient Sourcing: Finding high-quality, reliable suppliers for ingredients, especially if you aim to use natural or organic materials, can be difficult and expensive.

Regulatory Compliance: Navigating the regulations for skincare products, which vary by country, involves ensuring products meet safety standards and are properly labeled.

Funding and Financial Management:
Initial Capital: Securing sufficient initial funding to cover product development, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution is a significant hurdle.

Cash Flow Management: Managing cash flow effectively, especially in the early stages, is critical to sustaining the business.

Market Competition:

Standing Out: The skincare market is highly competitive, with many established brands. Differentiating your products and building a unique brand identity can be challenging.

Pricing Strategy: Setting a competitive yet profitable price point that reflects the quality and value of the product.

Marketing and Brand Building:

Building Awareness: Developing and executing effective marketing strategies to build brand awareness and attract customers.

Social Media and Influencer Partnerships: Navigating the fast-paced world of social media marketing and forming beneficial partnerships with influencers.

Sales and Distribution:

E-commerce Logistics: Managing an e-commerce platform, including issues related to website performance, payment processing, and customer service.

Retail Partnerships: Establishing relationships with retail partners and meeting their requirements for product placement and promotion.

Customer Trust and Retention:
Quality Assurance: Ensuring consistent product quality to maintain customer trust.

Customer Feedback: Handling customer feedback and complaints effectively, using it to improve products and services.

Scaling the Business:
Production Scaling: Increasing production capacity without compromising quality.

Operational Challenges: Managing growing operational complexities as the business scales.

Sustainability and Ethical Practices:

Sustainable Sourcing: Committing to sustainable and ethical sourcing practices, which can be more costly and challenging to maintain.

Environmental Impact: Reducing the environmental impact of packaging and production processes.

Navigating these challenges requires resilience, creativity, and a deep understanding of both the skincare industry and business management. Many successful skincare entrepreneurs emphasize the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and building a strong network of mentors and advisors.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
