Today we’d like to introduce you to James MahKween
Hi James, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated with a BFA in Musical Theater from American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA). After graduating, I began setting and reaching my goals. Ive performed with several artist and company’s some being Lula Washington Dance Theatre, JazzAntiqua, and Kouman Kele African Dance and Drum Company, and BrockusRed . While dancing with these companies I began developing my own choreography. My choreography has been shown at NAACP ACT-SO, Highways Performance Space, DANCESCAPE, DanceSpot LA, Tri-Art Festival, Sol-Cal Dance Invitational,Carnival Choreographers Ball, Crayproject’s PINS and HHII Dance Festival. I even got a few opportunities to choreograph for a few artist music video some being Kali J “Look at me” and Kettie Munroe “Let Go”. I’ve also produced my own showcase REFLECT.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road! Lol it felt like with every level up there were challenges that I had to face! Being cast, venue, logistics, even my own personal life. But I always made sure to keep my head up and to do my best in all situations knowing that only good would be at the end of this road!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a choreographer. I’ve been developing my choreography style for 11 years having mentors review my work and seeing if it clear what I’m trying to present emotionally and technically. I’ve received a lot of love over the years for my hustle in growing and showing off my choreographic abilities with jazz, modern, and contemporary finding my own creative approach to movement. A few of my friends began to proclaim my style “The MahKween Method” which I really liked. I’m extremely proud of having the opportunity to go to Kenya! It was my first time going out of the country and for it to be Africa. I felt truly blessed and grateful! It showed me that the work I’ve been doing hasn’t gone unnoticed. I really feel like the majority of my work being groups duets or solos can be danced by men or women has set me apart. I really love showing strength and softness between all genders. I’d like to feel that my work is inclusive. We all feel love, pain, mourning so why not make work that we all can connect with.
What’s next?
I really want to start choreographing musical. I feel like I’d would be a great asset because of my creative view and I love musicals! I’m interested in diving into choreography television. As a kid I always wanted to do something for “So You Think You Can Dance”. Even now when I’m watching television I say to myself “I need to be doing that”! Finally I would love to work with a music artist on tour. Again i feel like id have a creative outlook when helping create the tour. I’ve worked with a few artist on stage. When discuss the choreographic vision I’m always told that my mind is extremely creative and bold.
