Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Flynn
Hi Kyle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Kyle Flynn, and I was born in Cape Coral, Florida. Raised by my single mom alongside my two brothers, our early life was marked by a lack of control over our living situation due to only having one paycheck coming in. This uncertainty instilled in me a strong desire to run my own business and take control over my life.
At 18, when my then-girlfriend, now wife, decided to move to Orlando to pursue her dreams in VFX, I knew I had to step up. I saved up, bought a car, packed my things, and followed her to Orlando.
With no clear plan upon arrival, I started working at DreamCrete Custom Creations as a laborer. I often tell people that I was a 100-pound kid struggling to lift 100-pound buckets of concrete. During my three-and-a-half-year tenure, I discovered my passion for decorative concrete and working with people.
I eventually rose to the position of project/warehouse manager at DreamCrete. This role involved ordering materials, scheduling jobs, and implementing systems to improve the company’s efficiency.
An opportunity in real estate then came my way, and I transitioned to a job as an HOA manager. This led to a position in Atlanta, GA, where I became a fully licensed property manager, overseeing up to 800 single-family homes.
Although I excelled as a property manager, I felt my genuine efforts to help tenants were often unrewarded and ignored. After much reflection, I decided to return to my roots and start my own decorative concrete company—FlynnStone!
Since September of last year, I have been working diligently on FlynnStone, transitioning to full-time in mid-January. I don’t aspire to be rich; my goal is to create an environment where people are excited to get out of bed, do good work, and get paid well.
Since going full-time, FlynnStone has generated almost $70,000 in revenue. We are proud to have a 5-star rating on Google, with every client thrilled not only with their floor but also with their experience working with us from start to finish.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was raised relatively poor and have always relied on others to survive. While in hindsight this was difficult, it didn’t feel that way at the moment. I have no problem asking people for help or feedback now as an adult since I had to rely on the people around me growing up to get food or to get from point A to point B if my mom was unavailable.
As far as the business goes, getting loans was quite difficult. The only way I could get a loan was by pleading with my credit union and having my wife co-sign to get our loan pushed through.
This is because as a property manager the company I worked at lost roughly ~85% of staff due to a hedge fund buying up our largest client’s portfolio of homes, and as a result I also lost my job.
Getting over this sudden loss of stability was hard, but also gave me the time to reflect and find my next step in life.
We’ve been impressed with FlynnStone Decorative Concrete, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
FlynnStone Decorative Concrete is a locally owned and operated (Roswell, GA) decorative concrete company. Decorative concrete is EVERYWHERE — you may just not know it. Almost every Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Walmart, coffee shop, etc. Next time you go to grab a coffee, take a look at the floor, and nine times out of ten it’ll be a polished concrete floor.
We do polished concrete, stamped concrete, epoxy flake, metallic epoxy, stain & seals, and much more. In a word have anything and everything to do with making concrete beautiful!
We are known for our creative problem-solving and unique approach. Every single floor is different, and every single client’s wants, needs, and budget are different as well. As such we send an expert out to bid floors in person every time to ensure that clients get an accurate bid that fits their needs and solves any and all problems they may have.
I am personally most proud when we finish a floor and as we are packing up seeing the family walk the floor with smiles on their faces — especially seeing the kids jump up and down and feel the floor with their hands warms my heart.
I would want any and all readers to be aware of decorative concrete, and that it can be an economical and beautiful way to improve any space.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
