Daily Inspiration: Meet Sebah Abdu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebah Abdu

Hi Sebah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always had a passion for writing. During undergrad, I became exposed to a wide range of fields, sparking my interest. Everyone’s initial response is, “Oh, so you want to be a teacher?” Through a gritted smile, I explain in a nerdy fashion how I am a poet and have a poetry publication.

I started writing poems whenever ideas popped into my head- or when anything inspired me. I realized I had a hyper-focused appreciation for storytelling and film which led me to understand set life. I grew hungry for my passions to lead me to my career so I focused on how to give myself that experience and refine my craft. In all honesty- I and many creatives are experiencing a gatekept industry. It continued to feel frustrating and hopeless, so I took matters into my own hands and self-published my chapbook. I’m currently learning how to offer this service to others. I also launched The Abdu Review, a bi-annual poetry publication, and host monthly open mic nights. I can’t wait for others to understand my potential and not have anything to show for it.

I got where I am by being true to myself and recognizing when my interests don’t align with others. I go to book releases, apply for residencies, host open mics, apply to other publications, support other writers, and remain consistent with my efforts.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road.

The path of entrepreneurship has highs and lows. Some events will be packed out while others will get one person. Regardless of the outcome, I focus on what I aim to accomplish and count the small wins. I feel as though, if I create something I enjoy, others will find it too.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wordsmith dedicated to transforming ideas into compelling narratives. With a passion for storytelling and a keen understanding of the power of language, I craft messages that resonate with audiences and drive engagement.

I am a poet, editor, copywriter, copyeditor, model, and creative director.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
In elementary school, they would give us ice-cream day after finishing the times table or division table. We would be timed and have to get at least 90% of it right. I still suck at math but that was a highlight.
