Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Lacey
Hi Lauren, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Lauren Lacey, founder and Event Organizer of the Black Romance Book Fest, and an indie romance author.
Growing up, I was drawn to the stories that echoed the realities of my community—stories full of life, culture, pride, nostalgia, and love. Yet, these stories were and still are often overlooked in literary communities. As both a reader and writer, I’ve seen how Black Romance is treated differently. Our narratives are frequently purposely sidelined, mislabeled, and misrepresented for non-poc’s satisfaction. Black Romance narratives are included to check diversity boxes rather than truly celebrated. At large-scale literary events, these authors are often invited to speak on panels about ‘Black Love’ as an isolated topic rather than being integrated within the program.
However, the Black Romance Book Fest is different. Slated for May 30-June 1, 2025, BRBF 2025 will be a large-scale weekend event that showcases Black authors and their beautiful stories.
Joining a proud list of events celebrating Black Romance, the Black Romance Book Fest aims to ensure that Black voices and their creators are not just invited to the table but are also given the honor and space they deserve. Our festival is more than an event; it’s a community affirmation that Black Romance is at the heart of literary culture.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the road to launching the Black Romance Book Fest hasn’t been smooth, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Facing a gap in support from the traditional publishing and literary industry, we’ve leaned heavily on the enthusiasm and backing of our readers and authors. Their strong community support underscores the genuine demand for Black Romance narratives and fuels our resolve to push forward, even without conventional backing.
The overwhelming response we’ve received from the community demonstrated the viability and necessity of our festival. We’re committed to curating not just an event but a cultural celebration that honors the depth and diversity of Black Romance.
Our challenges have only deepened our drive to make the Black Romance Book Fest the most inspiring and inclusive literary event of the year. Every hurdle we overcome takes us one step closer to reshaping the literary landscape to be as rich and diverse as the community we serve.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a romance author from Savannah, Georgia, now living in Atlanta with my husband and children. I hold a B.A. in English from Armstrong Atlanta State University and an M.A. from Southern New Hampshire University. I’m passionate about crafting love stories that reflect who I am as a Black woman, wife, a business professional, small-town Southerner, a mother, and a flawed individual. My novels often explore themes of love and commitment set against both personal and societal challenges.
I’m best known for writing high-drama, small-town second-chance romances that blend elements of women’s fiction and romance. I focus on creating diverse characters, delving into the impact of trauma, and the journey toward healing through love. My style is all about bringing a deep empathy and realism to delicate subjects, which resonates with my readers.
What sets me apart is my genuine approach to storytelling. I don’t just write to entertain; I write to connect and heal, highlighting the power of love and resilience. This dedication extends to my role as the founder and organizer of the Black Romance Book Fest, where I strive to celebrate and elevate Black Romance, supporting a community that cherishes diversity in storytelling.
