Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Haynes
Hi Joshua, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began in 2013 with a deep passion for fashion, driven by the style and confidence it instilled in me. Although I was involved in various activities growing up—sports, playing instruments, and other hobbies—I always felt fashion was my true calling. In high school, I co-founded a brand called F.S.O., which stood for “Fly Stuff Only,” hoping it would launch my fashion career. However, it wasn’t until years later that I truly reconnected with my fashion aspirations.
After graduating high school, I attended Fort Valley State University for a year and a half, pursuing a degree in electronic engineering. Despite enjoying my time at an HBCU, I struggled with my major and decided to return to Augusta, GA, to rethink my future. Between 2017 and 2019, I became drawn to a street lifestyle, which led to numerous hardships and personal tragedies.
In 2019, a car accident and the loss of a close friend to street violence forced me into a dark period of reflection. This challenging time was mitigated by a strong support system that helped me through. Months later, I enrolled at Augusta Tech in Fall 2019, studying graphic design. Without a car or phone, I focused on practicing my art at home, using a hot glue gun and limited resources like old denim and fabric scraps to create DIY projects.
The pandemic provided ample time to further my skills, and by Fall 2020, I transferred to Kennesaw State University. Initially pursuing a Bachelor of Textiles, I switched to a Bachelor of Fine Arts. This period tested my dedication, but I overcame limitations with the help of supportive individuals and valuable opportunities. I graduated in May 2024 and am excited to continue my journey and see where it leads.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up, I always had a rough path. From growing in house of 7+ and watching my parents wake up and go grind everyday for better for us always was motivation to me. To see them going even now is more of a reason I keep my foot on gas.
I would definitely consider myself the black sheep of the family. But im grateful because hard times built strong character within me, that one day I can pass down to my kids.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an American fashion designer and entrepreneur, and I founded Jah’s Way Collections. While I am increasingly embracing the art world and prefer to be seen as an artist, my true passion lies in designing clothing. I am deeply committed to sustainability and the upcycle movement, fascinated by how something simple can be transformed into a piece of art.
Growing up, I admired designer fashion but also questioned the value of some high-priced items. Therefore, I take pride in infusing my designs with a couture approach. My work often features manipulation and quilting techniques, and I add intricate hand-sewn embellishments to bring a high-end fashion aesthetic to life.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I won’t deny it—I was a bit of a troublemaker growing up! However, I was also quite adventurous, trying out various hobbies and discovering what truly suited me. While my childhood was fairly typical, I admit I could have been more well-behaved at times. Overall, I think my experiences were pretty normal, though I certainly had my moments of mischief.
