Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhalin Knowles.
Hi Jhalin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started photography in 2016. During my last year in high school I took a photography class and fell in love with it. I always took photos on my iPhone but never took it serious. My dad encouraged me to start posting my work on the VSCO app and it kind of blew up from there. I was apart of my first ever campaign through VSCO called, ” WE THE CREATORS”. This acknowledgment from a brand influenced me to start taking my work more serious. From then on I’ve worked as a freelance photographer in Atlanta, Ga. Ive been blessed to work with brands and people that I never thought I get a chance to work with.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think any road to success is smooth and I’m still learning more daily. I think the toughest part for me was being seen. Atlanta/the world is over saturated with talent. It can be hard to even get a toe in the creative pool. It’s so easy to see your peers success and start the comparison game. This feeling of comparison started to weigh on my confidence in my work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would say I’m a portrait photographer first with hints of other areas. I enjoy taking images of people and capturing stories just from a look on a persons face. To be specific I love taking images of people that look like me. Not me literally but people I grew up with. I’m African American and I think we have so much beauty in our appearance and story. Capturing that beauty is the best part of my job.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
To be honest no, I’m not the biggest reader other than the Bible. Any podcast I watch is purely for laughter to get my mind off work or the world. A book I love is Miciah Carters book, ” What’s my name”. It’s a photo book from my favorite photographer. It inspires me daily on just how to think more creatively when taking photos.
