From Knoxville to More Than Pickleball: Our Love Story with the Game

My wife, June, and I spent 24 wonderful years in Knoxville, TN. It was a typical summer day in 2018 when we stumbled upon something extraordinary at our local gym. An instructor and a group were engrossed in a fascinating paddle sport. We were intrigued, and soon discovered it was called pickleball.

The very next day, our journey began. I was already an avid tennis, paddleball, racquetball, and golf player, but I yearned for June to find a sport she loved too. We’d tried others without success. Initially, pickleball seemed no different – June swung at balls that were already two feet past her, with no sense of height or bounce. But something magical happened: she fell in love with the game. She didn’t give up, and now, she’s a skilled player who truly enjoys it.

My original plan was for her to find a sport we could share, while I continued my other pursuits. That plan backfired spectacularly! Now, pickleball is the only sport I play.

In the beginning, we dove headfirst into tournaments, even braving the cold winter months. We’ve amassed over 50 medals – a testament to our dedication!

Pickleball has transformed our lives. In six short years, we’ve made more genuine friendships than in our entire lives combined. We’re happier than ever, and we want to share that joy with others.

After 24 years as a professor at the University of Tennessee, starting More Than Pickleball was a leap of faith. Launching a brick-and-mortar business in a new town, with no prior connections, was daunting. But we trusted in the pickleball community’s warmth, passion, and spirit.

Every day confirms our belief. We’re making incredible friends, receiving support and encouragement from all corners. While the challenges of construction and long days are undeniable, we never tire because we’re surrounded by wonderful people.

MTP is more than just a place to play; it’s where friendships blossom, laughter echoes, and sweat flows freely. We didn’t start this venture for financial gain; we’re not entrepreneurs or investors. We simply LOVE pickleball, the camaraderie, and the vibrant atmosphere it creates.
