Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Mills.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Samantha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Samsortof of in the hopes of helping to inspire, and connect with, others on their health and fitness journeys. This is broad, but it’s for a reason. I always knew that I wanted to work in a field where I could help people, and hoped it would be something where I could also work for myself. I went through the more conventional ideas of being a nurse, being a nutritionist, a health coach or fitness instructor, and even other routes such as owning a boutique or writing for a publication. But nothing seemed like a perfect fit.
When I moved to Atlanta and started to figure myself out more, I began realizing that I wanted to blog! I was big into journalism in high school, being on both the yearbook and media staff, and I was super passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle that involved more than just eating well and going to the gym. A healthy lifestyle also includes doing the things that fill our souls, like going on a hike or taking in a hot yoga class. It involves hanging out with your friends and having pizza because you don’t care about the calorie content. I wanted to be real and raw.
There are SO many inspirational women in the blog world, and I don’t think there will ever be enough. We can ALL provide value while we are on this earth and we can all find ways to relate to so many different people and experiences as well, so each blogger is important to someone! As of now, I’m strictly on Instagram and creating content for my blog (so be on the lookout)!
Has it been a smooth road?
Moving here was a big adjustment. I uprooted and left everything and everyone I knew back home in Orlando for a city where I had no job lined up. I moved with my best friend and we had intentions of going into business together that never really came to a head. So then, it was a process to figure out my individual plan and what I was passionate about, all while doing normal adult things, like paying bills and saving for a newer car.
I knew I wanted to help others to find inspiration, gain true happiness and obtain the motivation to be their best selves. So, I set out to create an Instagram blog and started connecting. I have been lucky enough to reconnect with old friends here in Atlanta and have the support of my loving boyfriend, as well as everyone back home! My road thus far has been pretty smooth thus far, and I’m so thankful for that.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Samsortof story. Tell us more about the business.
Samsortof is pretty simple. I create content to inspire others to get outside, cook good food and enjoy their lives! I want people to live as much in the present as they can and connect to others. I would say I’m probably most known for the food I post on my Instagram. I LOVE to cook! I’m primarily plant-based and mostly healthy (like I referenced before… I love pizza… and a good craft beer too). I post lots of Instagram stories of what I’m cooking and I stay very engaged with my followers and their questions.
I also post tons of nature photos because I really enjoy being outdoors and hiking. And from time to time, you will also find fitness stories, motivational posts and the occasional personal post as well. I will say the thing that sets me apart the most (and also one of my hurdles) is having an Instagram that doesn’t always follow the same color story/theme. Since it encompasses all things health and wellness, the posts tend to vary.
I love the way that my feed looks because it is different, but I gain followers slower than other accounts, as I believe most people follow creators for the more specific and branded content that they post! I’m okay with that though and respect peoples interests. I admire bloggers who have such a beautifully uniform feed (and follow a ton myself), but I want to try something different!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
This is tough to answer because the industry will shift with the technological advances and changes that arise. I think for me, this will make having a website and owning a blog easier (or maybe more user-friendly). But as far as the social media platforms? It will definitely be tougher to break into the blogging world in the coming.
The blogging industry is booming and it a wonderful and inspirational community. But because of this, blogging through social media is becoming more saturated. Hopefully, social media will expand and different outlets will be created. I hope there will continue to be enough space for all of the people who want to blog, whether for pleasure or for a career!
