Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantha Chhoeurm
Hi Chantha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my nail career way back in 2009, right when the nail industry was booming. Honestly? I got into it because, well, fast and easy money! Truth be told, I wasn’t exactly in love with doing nails at first. But it did let me scratch my itch to be an artist. I’ve always loved painting and drawing, and doing nails gave me a creative outlet (even if I didn’t know it yet).
Then came 2020, the year that flipped everything upside down. After the shutdown, my city was one of the first to reopen beauty salons. I was working at Sugarcoat Midtown when my favorite boss, Tea (yes, her name is Tea—like the drink!),and owner Peiru asked me to come back. At first, I was like, “Uh, no thanks,” but Tea was such a great boss, I couldn’t say no.
Out of 16 workers, only 4 of us came back, and this is when I really started to love doing nails. The shop vibe? Completely different. Gone were the chaotic, stressful days—COVID had this weird way of slowing things down. With fewer people, I had the time to take things slow, perfect my craft, and, lucky for me, nail art was blowing up! With my love for drawing and creating, it was a match made in heaven.
Even though I already had a loyal clientele, COVID gave me the chance to build even more. But as things started going back to “normal,” so did the chaos. The salon got hostile again, and I knew, for the sake of my mental health, I had to make a change. So, in May 2022, I made the best decision of my life: I got my own suite! My own space to thrive, create, and just be me. Since then, I haven’t stopped working, and I’m so blessed to have my amazing clients follow and support me through it all!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, it definitely hasn’t been easy! I might’ve made it *look* easy, but trust me, I was holding it together with sheer willpower and coffee! I never want anyone to see me struggle, so behind the scenes, it was a whole different story. Imagine this: I signed my lease, and within two weeks, I had to start my business from scratch—getting my LLC, business license, and drowning in paperwork. I basically lived on Google, like, “How do I start a business for dummies?” 😂
And if that wasn’t enough, I had to buy every single item I needed with the little savings I had. I’m talking *everything* from nail polishes down to the tiny things you’d never even think of. And then, boom, I started working right away, juggling 4 to 5 clients a day, 6 days a week. Honestly, I’m still not sure how I survived that phase, but hey—I did it! Somehow, it all came together, and here I am!
We’ve been impressed with The nail collective , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m the proud owner of a cozy private suite nail salon, where everything is all about gel! Whether it’s a regular gel mani, structural gel, builder gel, Gel-X, or Polygel—I’ve got the whole gel world at my fingertips (literally!).
What sets me apart? I’m kind of like your nails’ best friend. I actually care about their health! If you ask for something that I know your nails won’t love, I’m going to politely say “nope!” and suggest something better. I’m all about helping you grow out any damage so your nails are strong enough to handle the look you really want. After all, I want my work to last! And trust me, I don’t want to see you twice a month—unless we’re grabbing coffee. 😂
I’m also obsessed with Korean and Japanese brands—their products are like magic! Plus, they’re less toxic and way gentler on your nails, which is always a win. Not to mention, their nail art is *chef’s kiss* perfection. I can’t wait to share it with you!
