Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylan Fox
Hi Kaylan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a young girl, I was always infatuated with TV shows, movies, and entertaining others, but my actual journey didn’t fully start until I was in middle school. I joined the drama theatre club at school after years of enjoying the class. My then teacher, Mrs. Ware, encouraged me to further pursue my acting career in high school, so this led me to audition for Tri-Cities High School for its magnet Drama Theatre department. I was accepted into the school and program, and fortunately, I was in two other variations of the department, including Technical Theatre and Musical Theatre. As I was learning my craft, I began to realize that I had stage fright, but this did not hinder me from learning how to develop a great actor. I began to fall in love with being as hands on as possible with a production, even if that meant being behind the scenes, so I developed my skillsets from each department to learn the artistry that takes place backstage in order to make the magic on stage happen.
I still do what I love, but instead of being in theatre, I work in television! I graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Media Arts, with a concentration in Radio, TV, and Film. I work as a full-time producer at a network in midtown Atlanta while owning my own production business, KTF Productions LLC. The journey is just getting started, and as my professor, Dr. Jackson would say, “If you’re not learning in this industry every day, you aren’t doing something right.” Luckily, I am here to learn and my dreams have already been cultivated by God.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life has obstacles already, but the life of a creative is exhausting to say the least. When you are committed to your craft, the biggest obstacle you are faced with is time. On one hand, there isn’t enough time for deadlines, sleep, to capture the perfect scene, or for you to get “inspired” whenever you need. Inspiration can wake you out of your sleep. And on the other hand, there isn’t enough time for family, spontaneous outings with friends, dating, leisure time, etc. I have to schedule my entire life, including self-care because I use down time to tend to my business. Setting boundaries, releasing the fear of missing out, and knowing who supports you enough to respect that helps tremendously.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a TV producer and creative director. People typically call me to bring their vision to life, whether its short films, talk shows, podcasts, music videos, or live entertainment productions, I am your girl. I am becoming very proud to see how diverse my production catalog has been and the fact that I’m not limited in what I can do. If I haven’t done something before, we can strategically plan how to make it happen and learn something new. I also have been upgrading my equipment and investing in creating quality content.
I am expanding my projects by incorporating more elements I feel have been missing from TV and music videos for some time now, in my next few projects. We are moving so fast in this content creating world that when you watch a show from the 80s to early 2000s, you can tell they took their time on so many details, yet, they also had fun with motion, music, angles, color, etc. so I feel we need that and more. Also, every project I am working on is a unique concept, so there isn’t limitations on what we plan to do.
What were you like growing up?
My mom was in the military, so I moved to America with my immediate family at 5 years old, and that was a major adjustment at a young age, but it’s somewhat of a hard concept for people to grasp since I’m not a “foreigner”. Growing up I was very quiet and shy, but somehow, I could always easily make friends, who usually last a lifetime. To this day, I tell people I am a true ambivert. I love my alone time, just as much as I love being with people. I was always apart of extracurricular activities like competitive cheerleading, BETA club, orchestra, and drama club, as mentioned before. I was a smart, curious, and adventurous child. I excelled in school, but teachers weren’t aware of how goofy I was, or how I used my wittiness to joke around with others. They eventually learned as I became older and less shy. And though I was shy at one point, I was always forward and stood my ground on what I would and wouldn’t do.
