Meet Katrina Highsmith of THE HIGHSMITH GROUP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Highsmith.

Katrina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been a social butterfly, goal getter, and a communicator by nature.

Entrepreneurship has always been instilled in me, but the funny part is, I still do not know why. My parents nor grandparents were Entrepreneurs, but for some reason, I always wanted to work for myself and be my own boss, I actually like making hard decisions.

While attending Delaware State University I declared my major to be Communications with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism but shortly realized that I wanted to produce work behind the scenes. I then decided to switch from Broadcast Journalist to Public Relations. Best decision ever!!

After working in my field for a couple of years, my friend and I decided to start our own Public Relations firm. We worked together for several years and then decided to part ways. I then re-branded the company into The Highsmith Group.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road and being an Entrepreneur is very rewarding, yet very difficult. Some of my struggles along the way and struggles that I still face is attracting new business. The Public Relations and Marketing department has become very competitive over the years which is why it is important to continue to educate yourself and team members in an effort to remain abreast on new technologies and practices in the field.

Another challenge I would like to mention is managing expectations. It is very important to manage the expectations for new clients, especially those who are not too familiar with the PR and Marketing field. Be transparent with your clients and keep a constant flow of communication between them and a team member to avoid miscommunications.

Lastly, when you are an Entrepreneur you will run into financial issues because you are operating a business which can be costly. Finances can go up and down because one month you can have 5 clients, and one month you can have 10. Financial balance is important so you do not find yourself or your business in a difficult situation.
