Today we’d like to introduce you to Ilona Karneyenka.
Ilona, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been a creative person and passion for architecture and design was in my nature since I was a kid. I grew up in Belarus (Eastern Europe) and had an opportunity to travel and study different countries and ways of life.
Interior Design wasn’t offered as a program when I was choosing a college after high school and I took a different path. Several years later after me and my family moved to Atlanta, I found out that there is an Interior Design Degree program at the College not far from our house, I applied the next day and graduated a few years later with the Best Overall Portfolio Award.
While still being at school I interned and worked with well established Atlanta interior designers, who mentored, inspired and supported me to start my own firm in 2013. With a strong vision for the company, I was taking one project at a time building our clientele and reputation.
Diana joined the team in summer 2017. With the background in industrial design and real estate, she became an incredible asset for the company. Both of us constantly continue our education and expanding our expertise in sustainable design and color psychology.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My interior design business is my passion, and my family is the love of my life. It’s always a challenge to find a healthy balance between two of them, and find time for myself. It’s a learning process, and I’m definitely doing better than a few years ago (I stopped working on weekends, that’s something. 🙂 )
