Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Ravenell
Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I originally went to school to become a teacher. After graduating, I taught in elementary schools for about four years. During that time, I often saw students coming to class without the basic necessities yet still being expected to learn. This experience sparked something in me—I wanted to work with youth in a way where I could really understand their needs and support them on a deeper level. That’s when I started exploring opportunities in the nonprofit sector.
I’ve now been in the nonprofit space for nearly four years, and I’ve learned so much. One key takeaway is that nonprofits rely heavily on funding from donors, corporate sponsorships, grants, and other sources to run effectively. I noticed a gap, especially with smaller nonprofits, in securing grant funding, and I felt compelled to do something about it.
That’s what inspired me to start D&V Consulting Services. With a Master of Public Administration and a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Management, I’ve spent several years helping organizations with everything from day-to-day operations to grant research and small-scale proposals. Through this work, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges Black-led nonprofits and businesses face in securing funding and staying sustainable.
Currently, I work at an incredible nonprofit in Atlanta, where I oversee their membership base. At the same time, I’m building my business and, of course, being a proud momma to my amazing daughter.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced has been time management. As a single mom working a 9-5 while building a business, it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. I still have those long nights and early mornings, making sure I fulfill all my responsibilities and keep my daughter active.
We’ve been impressed with D&V Consulting Services , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Each year, nonprofit organizations receive billions of dollars in funding, but only about 1.8% of that goes to Black-led nonprofits. Similarly, while African Americans make up 48% of Georgia’s population, they own just 5.1% of Black-owned businesses, and those businesses generate only 12.2% of the state’s revenue (according to the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council).
A big reason for these disparities is that Black-led businesses and nonprofits often lack the training needed to secure funding, don’t have enough capital to keep operations running smoothly, and struggle to build strong donor or customer bases.
That’s what inspired me to start D&V Consulting Services. With a Master of Public Administration and a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Management, I’ve spent several years working with organizations on everything from daily operations to grant research and small-scale proposals. Through this work, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges Black-led nonprofits and businesses face when it comes to securing funding and staying sustainable.
D&V Consulting Services was founded to help bridge these gaps by providing the expertise and support these organizations need to thrive. We’re dedicated to empowering Black entrepreneurs, small businesses, and community-focused nonprofits with high-quality grant writing and consulting services. Our mission is to ensure these organizations have the resources they need to not only survive but grow and make a lasting impact.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Never stop learning—seriously! When you start a service-based business, think of yourself as the expert in your field. But remember, the business landscape in the U.S. is always evolving, so it’s good to stay up to date.
And don’t forget to network! Make it a point to attend coffee hours, happy hours, chamber of commerce events, business development organizations, and anything else happening in your area. The more people you connect with, the better. If you truly know your field and get your face out there, the clients will come to you.
One last thing. Don’t wait until it’s perfect to do it. Just start it, make mistakes, and learn!
