Inspiring Conversations with Yazmine Taylor of LusciousbyYazmine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yazmine Taylor

Hi Yazmine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My mother always braided me and my sisters hair growing up. I gradually learned to braid by watching my mother braid my sisters hair. I believe myself to be a visual learner. Every skill and style that I know now, I’ve taught myself.
In High School I began braiding my own hair. After this, I began braiding close friends and family members hair for free. In College, I began to take my craft more seriously and I began to service my peers on campus. I gained some publicity and began growing my clientele. COVID hit in 2020, my University shifted to online classes. I left dorming on campus and came back home to New York. Struggling to keep up with my studies online, I dropped out of college for a year. I had stopped doing hair for a little while since returning home; I lacked confidence and was in my head too much. There was a lot of competition in NY compared to Upstate. I kept telling myself ” Everyone does hair out here. Whose gonna book with me? What makes me different?” After some convincing, I resumed taking clients again. In order to grow my clientele, I promoted free hair services and began doing hair in my mothers livingroom. I also enrolled in a trade school at Swedish Institute, located in Manhattan, New York and took up becoming a Medical Assistant. I majored in Occupational Studies and received my Associates degree after my 2 year completion in the program. While in my 2 year program, I was a full time student, I had 2 part time jobs and took clients on the side. August 2022, I moved from being a home based stylist to working in a salon. May 2023, I graduated college and quit my job as a Medical Assistant to pursue my dream of becoming a Hairstylist. October 2024, I have officially launched my hair products line and I am continuing to go after my goals. Trying to let go of my self doubt, I’m practicing self discipline, time management and organization skills. This is just the beginning and so much awaits me on my journey !

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been so tough! Running a business becoming an Entrepreneur is not for the weak! It tests your faith, sanity and discipline

– Faith; My faith is so important. I wouldn’t have anything without Allah(Gods) doing. When you put Allah first, everything will align itself.

– Self doubt; I doubt myself so much, even till this day. Its really a mind game. I have to continue telling myself I can do this! Because I know that I can

– Comparison; This is my biggest downfall, comparing my progress to someone who I don’t even know, thinking I should be further in life than where I am right now. I don’t know the trials or troubles they went through for them to be where they are today but I would base my assumptions off social media and like everyone says ” Don’t trust everything you see on Instagram.” Social media is a gimmick and people only put out what they want to share. So just remembering this ismy life in on this journey by myself, for myself and what is for me will find me

– Mental Health; This is so important. and it was only till this year that I really prioritized myself. I used to work 7 days a week thinking if I’m not available then ill miss out on money when in reality, I was burning myself out. I was beginning to feel burnt out because I made the mistake of trading my time for money and when you do that, you actually set yourself back and Im happy to have realized that because now I take better care of myself. I work 5 days a week, I get massages, and cater to myself more, I spend more time with my family and friends. I have a better piece of mind.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
When people speak about” Southern Hospitality” they weren’t lying. I love Atlanta so much! I enjoy my stay everytime! The people are so nice and welcoming and I love the Melanin! I love being around Black excellence. The grind & hustle is so motivating; I love being in communities like that.
Being from New York, Im used to walking everywhere. In Atlanta is is best to invest in a car because not everything is walking distance
