Daily Inspiration: Meet Dane Reid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dane Reid

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I came to Atlanta in 95 from NY when this city wasn’t the booming metro area that it is today. It was a blank canvas with a lot of great painters. I was a college student with no brush and didn’t know how to paint. But a few years after graduating college I realized that I had the same talent as others that were hailed as Picasso’s. I used to hear all these guys on the radio with big voices doing commercials and radio imaging and telling the whole city where to go to party and I would think “I can do that.” So I started practicing in my house doing the voices and then I bought the equipment I needed to get started. I wasn’t good, but at least I had a brush to practice until I got good. And as so many people in Atlanta do, I faked it until I made it. I convinced one client to work with me every week. I used those commercials to practice until I learned how to do what I do now well. By then I had a resume and took my voiceover and commercial production skills to another level. From there I began doing all kinds of projects in voiceover for big companies. I do e-learning, political commercials, documentaries, live announcing for events, political VO’s, voiceovers for videos, radio imaging and a lot more. Within the past 2 years I did the one and only audiobook I’ve ever done which was for my own book entitled “Forget Having Kids. I’m Having Fun.” It’s my second book and one of the most proud projects I have ever worked on.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No. Not at all. For the first few years I was super poor. I even went bankrupt. Even now I have to stay on my game to avoid technology from making me obsolete

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a voice actor and author. I am most proud of being heard on the radio or tv by someone at all times of the day or night. Someone is listening to my voice as you read this. And I am super proud to have sat down and written an entire book. I have a very short attention span and to focus for months to get my thoughts out and make my book as good as it is, is an accomplishment.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Don’t. Don’t start out in voiceover. I was lucky to start many years ago. Things have changed. Do something else.
