Check Out Emalee Evans’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emalee Evans

Hi Emalee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been into art and creativity. Since elementary school, i knew I wanted a career in the creative field. I was in 5th grade drawing clothing designs and learning how to sew. I also found interest in interior design. Though, when i was about 13, I had an iPod touch with a camera and that’s when i found a love for photography. I took photos of random things- flowers, textured walls, buildings, etc. One photo in particular I remember is of the castle as Disney World. I thought the photo was so great, It could have been in an ad or something. I couldn’t express it then, but I had a natural understanding of all things that make a great photo— composition, framing, the use of symmetry, etc. I was excited to take a photography class at Arabia Mountain High School. It is still one of my most memorable classes. I learned the elements of photography for the first time and got to apply it through class assignments and even taking photos at school events. I also had my photo displayed at an art exhibit that the school district hosted. I decided this is what i wanted to do career- wise from then. I got my first camera from a pawn shop in 2016 right before my first job as a photographer at my god sister’s sweet sixteen party. I attended the Art institute of Atlanta in 2017 and completed an associates degree in digital photography. I learned so much about different types of photography like portraiture, product photography, and food photography. I learned about lighting, editing/ retouching, and how to manually use a digital camera. From there, I found that I really enjoy creative portrait photography and product photography. I now have eight years of specializing in portrait photography. Currently, I am collaborating with several local businesses to produce product photography, and I have been working with a real estate media company since late 2023.

In 2021, I began planning for a huge goal of mine, opening a photography studio. I had a vision to create my own space where I could host sessions, create sets, and invite other artists to create and showcase their work. In 2024, that vision became a reality with the launch of Studio 25.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Breaking into commercial photography was a significant challenge for me. I wanted to establish a stable income through either product or real estate photography and move away from retail jobs. Over the past few years, I applied and interviewed for numerous positions, but I struggled to find success. Despite having a strong portfolio—something I was often complimented on in interviews—the lack of experience with larger companies held me back. However, in 2023, I finally secured a contract position with a real estate media company, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the experience ever since.

Opening my studio was another challenging journey filled with numerous obstacles. I struggled to find a space that was both affordable and large enough to accommodate a photography studio, while also meeting the necessary zoning requirements. Once I secured a location, I discovered it required extensive renovations, including painting, fixture replacements, and lots of cleaning. The preparation took much longer than I anticipated, as most of the work was done by myself, along with the help of family and friends. Though, I cut down much of the expenses this way, and also by buying second hand furniture and equipment. Despite these hurdles, I’m thrilled to say that the studio has turned out exactly as I envisioned it. With its fun and retro theme, and I truly love being here.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer specializing in portraits, headshots. product, and real estate photography. I enjoy creative portraits and product photography- using props, and bright colors. I do a bit of fine art photography when i find the time to go out and be creative. I even had a photo of mine featured in a popup exhibit at the High Museum of Art for an Atlanta Falcons season kick off event in 2023. (Cascade in rear view mirror photo.)

My proudest achievement is the opening of Studio 25 in Tucker, Ga. It’s a fully equipped photography studio/ creative space where I do all of my photo sessions and can be rented hourly, or through monthly membership for any creative project. The space is 1500 sq. ft. and it includes the studio area, an office space, a dressing room, reception area, and a private bathroom.

How do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t consider myself particularly “lucky” . I never win a raffle, a bingo, or anything like that. Haha.. I will say that I am blessed for everything i have accomplished thus far. I had a plan for 2+ years to open my own studio.. and it was looking improbable at first because of rent costs. I guess I was lucky to find a shared studio space in 2023, that would further encourage me to continue with my plan. I shared a studio space in an office building for 8 months. I then found a space that needed a subtenant and I took the opportunity. It was such an easy process to get in. It felt “meant to be”
