Today we’d like to introduce you to Akayla Irving
Hi Akayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion for art has been a constant in my life since adolescence. However, as I grew older, I found myself drifting away from my artistic pursuits. It wasn’t until 2020 that I made a conscious effort to reconnect with my craft and take it seriously. The encouragement and support from my family and peers played a crucial role in this journey, inspiring me to push my boundaries and fully embrace my artistic abilities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My artistic journey has not been without its challenges. I’ve encountered numerous obstacles, including artist block, burnout, and moments of discouragement. During these times, motivation waned, and I often felt that my work fell short of my vision, leading to significant creative blocks. However, I found a way to overcome these hurdles by stepping outside my usual routine and exploring new mediums, styles, and inspirations. This approach has revitalized my creativity and allowed me to continue evolving as an artist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist specializing in acrylics as well as Prismacolor and pen-and-pencil drawings. I’m best known for my vibrant acrylic paintings of cartoons and my intricate line work in my paper drawings. What sets me apart is my meticulous attention to detail and my willingness to explore different techniques and styles, allowing me to push creative boundaries and avoid being confined to a single niche. I take pride in continuously evolving my artistry and connecting with my audience through diverse forms of expression.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those just starting out in their artistic journey, my advice is to embrace experimentation and stay consistent. Don’t be afraid to try new mediums and styles; this exploration can lead to unexpected inspiration and growth. I wish I had known earlier that art is all about practice and trial and error. Creative blocks are a natural part of the process, and rather than getting discouraged, it’s essential to view them as opportunities for learning. Consistent practice is key—without it, growth is difficult to achieve. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your creativity, and remember that your artistic voice will evolve over time. Trust the journey!
