Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Burris
Latoya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in graphic design began with a shared dream between my best friend and me: to create and publish a magazine that resonates with young Black women. This aspiration took root during our high school years and inspired me to pursue a degree in Communication Design. After graduating, I started my career as a junior designer at Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment. Today, I proudly serve as the Creative Services Manager at The Corcoran Group. Throughout my career, regardless of my daily responsibilities, I’ve always made time to work with clients, helping them fulfill their own creative visions.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is rarely a smooth journey; it’s all about how we navigate our struggles. One of my biggest challenges as a graphic designer was discovering my niche. Many designers feel pressured to do it all, but I learned that this isn’t necessary. I found my passion in helping brands develop their identities and systems, which has been incredibly fulfilling.
Another challenge I’ve faced is imposter syndrome. There have been times when I felt inadequate, despite evidence to the contrary. When those feelings arise, I remind myself of my accomplishments and the many people I’ve supported over the years. This practice helps ground me and boosts my confidence.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As I mentioned earlier, my specialty lies in brand design and strategy, which encompasses everything from identity systems—like logos, stationery, and websites—to comprehensive branding solutions. What truly sets me apart from other designers is my collaborative approach with clients. I strive to ensure they feel completely satisfied throughout the process, and I prioritize educating them about each step we take together. This alignment helps minimize potential roadblocks and keeps the project on track.
I’ve noticed that some designers can come across as condescending, which can hinder effective collaboration. In my experience, the more I listen to my clients and foster a collaborative relationship, the more successful the project becomes. While there have been instances where clients chose a direction I wouldn’t have recommended, I take comfort in knowing that I provided them with all the necessary information. Ultimately, I feel good about the process, even if the final outcome isn’t what I envisioned.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is feeling at peace with the outcome.
