Life & Work with Aaron Desilva of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Desilva

Hi Aaron , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first joined the AGMC back in April 2018. I received so much unconditional love and support from Don and all the members of the chorus during the summer cycle for the show Peachtree and Broadway that I decided to stick with the chorus. I feel like I found my community and when the holiday 2018 cycle started, I wanted to find a way to give back/help the chorus since they were instrumental in who I am as a person today. So I joined the Pride committee and the marketing committee. I served as the marketing officer for the AGMC from 2019-2021 and continued to serve on the committee after to assist with running the AGMC social media page. I also co-chaired the Voices of Note (which is the umbrella organization of the AGMC and Atlanta Women’s chorus) Pride Committee from 2019-2023.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I got into my positions a year before covid. I learned a lot in 2019. When the pandemic hit, I had to stop and recalibrate on how to do things. It was a huge learning curve and I learned to give my self and other people around me more grace. What made my positions on marketing and the pride committee easy was the people I work and collaborated it. I love to see and hear different ideas and perspectives on anything because nothing is linear or in black and white.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So my actual job is doing office administrative work for an engineering firm called Foresite Group. What I’m most known for is how well I communicate with people, how kind I am, and how flexible I am when changes occur.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
When working for a non-profit like the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus/Voices of Note, it’s important to find a cause you agree with and that you want to fight for. I can say that without the AGMC/VON, I would NOT be the person I am today. They are an integral part of the adult I am and who I want to keep evolving into.

If I were to tell my “2019 self” it would be to slow down, listen more, and not to be so hard on myself.
