Today we’d like to introduce you to Nya (Skrilla) Rice
Hi Nya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for fashion started my first year of college at Savannah State University. I was encouraged to join a modeling organization by one of my friends there since they thought I’d be a beautiful addition to the organization. As we prepared for our shoots and first show of the season I started to see modeling and fashion as art more than “just clothes”. Learning different textures and proportions and getting used to the creative freedom fashion has to offer.
After our season was over with, I continued to grow my love for fashion by doing small photo shoots around campus. At the time, I kept all of it private until I started to hear from many of my peers that I should start to actually take fashion and modeling seriously and put my face out there for the world to see. After realizing that I could potentially go far with this career if I worked hard enough for it, I finally took off with the idea. By this point the school year was over and I had decided to stay back home in Atlanta to see if I can go farther with my career in fashion and modeling.
I started setting my goals on what I wanted to accomplish by the end of the year and got to work. I began going to small networking events just to get my name and face out there. I then attended an open shoot and got scouted by someone who helps run Westhaven International Management. I ended signing the first of many to come contracts with them. From there I have been gaining more traction more connections. Months later I auditioned for one of the biggest shows held in Atlanta hosted by Young Atlanta, not knowing how much traction that would give me. I’ve met so many beautiful people along the way and made so many connections with people & so excited to see what my future holds as time goes on.
Looking back at my whole journey, in 7 months I have accomplished so much with this career after coming home and can’t thank anyone but God for getting me to where I am now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Unfortunately for anyone with a big dream, none of it was a smooth road. However, I have faith that God wouldn’t lead me in this direction and have failure be the outcome. But that doesn’t mean that outcome wont have bumps and bruises on the way.
It has been many nights where I stayed up asking God “Why do I have to wait?”, or “Why isn’t this working?”. Questioning if he was really hearing my prayers.
Struggling to feel “enough”, or not take things personal in this industry. I had to realize that everything would come to me in due time, just continue to have faith and don’t stay down when the weight of the world tries to knock you down.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Fashion Model/ Influencer. I model for different clothing brands whether it be for a photo shoot or a runway. I mostly specialize in fashion and is mostly known for my unique style. I do not set myself to one specific type of clothing style. I am able to change it up from streetwear, to classy, y2k, country, retro. You name it, i’ll put it together. Another unique thing about me is that I mostly thrift my clothes. Majority of my wardrobe is cool finds I’ve acquired while exploring the world.
With all of this and a creative mind to top if off, I’ve inspired many to take a chance when it comes to fashion and encourage people to step out of their comfort zone. To stop caring about what society finds “acceptable” and be you.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me most is firstly God. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. Right below that is the importance to have my creative freedom. I have always been one to think outside the box, or not even think about a box at all. Having my creative freedom allows me to express who I really am, what’s going through my head, and then get to share it with the world. Hearing someone say “you inspired me to…” really adds fuel to the fire on why I should keep going.
