Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Sparks
Hi Kenya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I officially started in 2020. I had so much “free time” and wanted to try doing my nails at home. At the time, I only wanted to make press-on nails. I did not think it would become a full-time passion. After making numerous sets for myself, family and friends, it became very therapeutic for me. I would use social media to find nail inspiration and I always came across the most perfect manicures—I was obsessed! Once I went back into the office, my job at the time, gave out additional stipends to all of the staff to be used for whatever we wanted. I took the additional funds and decided to apply for a cosmetology program nearby and started immediately. I really felt it was meant to be, as the program was the exact amount I had received. After I completed my program, I knew I wanted to offer services that weren’t popular in my area, so I signed up for my first dry manicure course and flew to Austin, TX. I offered free services on models, so I could gain experience and attract new clients. From there, I found more mentors in my industry that provided me with great insight and experience. I have travelled to different states to work with some of the best in the nail industry. I’ve also worked for a few different salons before I went completely solo. This industry is definitely what you make it and I still feel like this is just the beginning for me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entrepreneurship is so hard and there’s no perfect journey. There are milestones to overcome everyday! My biggest so far has been relocating to a new state! I moved from Memphis, TN in 2023 and it has been a big challenge moving and starting my business over from scratch.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in dry manicures, gel overlays and extensions. As a detail-oriented nail artist, I focus on providing safe services that improve your well being, but also look great! I’m passionate about all parts of my industry. I love educating my clients on the products I use and why. I help them make better decisions when it comes to their hands and feet! I am most proud that I get to do what I love and also share that with others. I share so many life moments with my clients, from birthdays to engagements and anniversaries. I would say manicurists definitely deserve a spot right next to therapists!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The beauty industry is a billion dollar industry and it’s only growing. We experience fluctuations just like other industries; however, there’s always a need for experienced cosmetologists. I know how important it is to always stay on trend, improve with trainings and never settle for the bare minimum. Our industry is always evolving with new technology and even repeating itself. Magnet gel polish (“cateye”) is very popular right now, but this technique is just making another round for clients. I’m currently inspired by Korean and Japanese nail art designs. I can see their technique and style really inspiring a lot more nail art work here in the States.
