Meet Canessa Thomas of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Canessa Thomas

Hi Canessa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a self-taught artist and storyteller who established PhloArt during a medical leave from my career in healthcare administration. Art played a crucial role in my healing journey and achieving remission from ulcerative colitis, a chronic illness I was diagnosed with at 19. As I began sharing my artwork on social media, I noticed a growing interest. This led me to shift my focus towards treating my art as a legitimate business.

I prioritized cultivating authentic connections, sharing valuable resources, and supporting fellow creatives. My artistic approach is not driven by self-interest but rather by the belief that my work contributes to the enhancement of the community and the collective as a whole.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the early stages of my career as a self-taught artist, I struggled with imposter syndrome. Without the benefit of formal art education, I found myself questioning the validity of my work. Despite a lack of commercial success, I continued creating, viewing my art as a deeply personal and spiritual expression. I held onto the belief that the passion and dedication I poured into my work would eventually be recognized and appreciated.

Through self-encouragement and commitment, I managed to overcome moments of doubt and fear. I understood that the path to success would not be easy, but I remained steadfast in my pursuit. By embracing consistency, authenticity, purpose, and love in my artistic works, I persevered. I trusted that my intended audience would eventually discover and appreciate the unique vision and passion I poured into my work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in creating digital, mixed media, and collage artwork. My inspiration comes from various aspects of life, love, music, and my spiritual journey. What sets me apart from others is my refusal to confine myself to a specific art style. I take pride in this versatility and the courage to explore.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am excited to work with artists from different disciplines who are interested in engaging in collaborative works. Support can be demonstrated by purchasing and/or sharing my artwork, as well as by tuning in to my upcoming podcast, Canvas Exchange. This podcast will offer valuable insights that can benefit both personal and professional pursuits.

For updates on my art and podcast, and to join me on this journey of artistic exploration, self-discovery, community, and acceptance, please follow me on Instagram. I truly thank you for your support.
