Today we’d like to introduce you to Maureen Doss
Hi Maureen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
“Turning Pain into Purpose”
In the winter of 2013, my life was forever changed. My 11-year-old daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer, and suddenly, my world turned upside down. I was now part of some club I never knew existed nor did I want to be in, the Cancer Moms. The next two years were filled with a whirlwind of emotions, sleepless nights, prayers, and endless hospital visits as she bravely fought through several brain surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. We even moved out of state for specialized care, leaving behind everything familiar. It was the most terrifying and challenging time of our lives. There are so many moments I am leaving out that are coming up but I’ll save those for another time.
As a parent, my priority became clear: I needed to be there for my daughter. I lost my job, and instead of focusing on my career ambitions, my focus shifted entirely to my family. I wanted nothing more than to hold both of my daughters, love on my younger one, and tell her everything was ok with her sister! I needed to be with my family, keep her alive, comfort her during her treatments, and create moments of joy amidst the pain. Most days I felt completely helpless, yet my daughter’s courage inspired me to keep pushing forward. In fact, I would find myself crying and she would say, “It’s ok Momma, I’m ok!” Gosh, why did it feel like she was stronger than me?
After two long years, the main part of her treatment finally ended, and I found myself at a crossroads. She was still deep in 8-hour days of physical and occupational therapy but I needed to help provide for my family again, the thought of returning to a traditional job felt suffocating. I wanted flexibility, the ability to take her to therapy appointments, pick up my other daughter from school and the time to be fully present for my family—something I knew a 9-to-5 job wouldn’t allow. I had been a stay at home mom most of their little lives anyway and that was my first love-being a mom!
With my background in running businesses, I decided to take a leap of faith. I created my virtual assistant business,(yes people thought I was crazy for starting a business at this point), a space where I could use my skills while maintaining the flexibility my family needed. But it wasn’t enough just to start a business; I wanted to build a system that would allow me to step away when necessary, planned or unplanned. I needed automation, workflows, and support. I needed a system that did it all. An all-in-one business eco system I called it!
That’s when the idea for Workhorse Hub was born. I envisioned a platform that would not only streamline my own business processes but also empower other moms to do the same. I needed a CRM that would automate my business processes and run my business when I wasn’t pushing all the buttons! I wanted to create proactive support systems that would help fellow moms scale their businesses without sacrificing their family time. Just like I’ve now done!
Through my Workhorse Hub CRM and my VAs, I now help other moms establish the same kind of flexible, resilient business model that allowed me to prioritize my family during the toughest times of our lives. I guide them in creating systems that ensure their businesses can run smoothly, even if they need to step away for an unexpected event or a planned family commitment.
My mission is clear: I want to help women live their lives without being tethered to their businesses. As a mom, my children will always come first, no matter how old they get. They still need me—just in different ways now. I believe that when we create the right support systems, we can achieve our goals while being present for the moments that matter most.
I share my story to inspire others who may find themselves in a similar situation. With courage, creativity, and the right systems in place, we can not only survive but thrive. Together, let’s build businesses that support our lives, allowing us to be the moms we aspire to be.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a business owner comes with its fair share of ups and downs. There are moments of doubt, unexpected setbacks, and the weight of responsibility that can feel overwhelming. Juggling client expectations, financial pressures, and the ever-evolving demands of entrepreneurship sometimes make me question if I’m on the right path. But then, there are the wins—the freedom to design my own schedule, the ability to be present for my family, the joy of helping other entrepreneurs build businesses that serve their lives, and the fulfillment of seeing my hard work create real impact. Every challenge has been a lesson, every setback a redirection, and every success a reminder of why I started. The downs may test me, but the ups—the flexibility, the growth, the purpose—make every struggle worth it. In the end, the rewards of entrepreneurship far outweigh the hardships, proving that with persistence and passion, anything is possible.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
One of the most important lessons I learned during the COVID-19 crisis was the power of being prepared and adaptable. When the world shifted online almost overnight, I was fortunate to already have an established presence in the digital space. While so many were scrambling to figure out how to transition their businesses or start something new, I had already built a foundation that allowed me to not just sustain my business but also help others navigate the shift.
