Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Geer
Hi Jordan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a child, my grandfather’s camera was a source of endless fascination. It was a heavy, black box, a relic of a bygone era, filled with intriguing dials and satisfying clicks. I’d spend hours with him, pretending to be a seasoned photographer, snapping imaginary shots of our backyard squirrels and vibrant hues. He’d patiently explain the basics, his eyes twinkling with amusement as I fumbled with the settings. More importantly, he’d share the stories behind his own photographs, tales of faraway lands and cherished memories, each image a portal to a different time and place. To me, it was simply a fun pastime with Grandpa, a way to spend an afternoon. I didn’t yet grasp the depth of his passion, the way he saw the world through that lens.I found myself drawn to the quiet corner where his camera sat, untouched. It was a tangible piece of him, a silent echo of his presence. Picking it up, the familiar weight grounded me. This time, however, play wasn’t on my mind. A new curiosity sparked within me, a desire to truly understand the instrument he’d held so dear.
I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, devouring books on photography, watching countless tutorials, and experimenting with every setting I could find. The initial thrill of simply pointing and shooting faded, replaced by a deeper appreciation for the art and science behind capturing light and shadow. There were moments of frustration, of course, when my images fell flat or the technical jargon seemed overwhelming. But a persistent drive, fueled by the memory of my grandfather, pushed me forward.
My senior year of high school became a turning point. The world around me transformed. I began to see light not just as illumination, but as a sculptor, shaping form and mood. Ordinary scenes became extraordinary, imbued with a unique beauty I’d never noticed before. The way sunlight streamed through the leaves of a tree, the fleeting expression on a stranger’s face, the intricate patterns in a butterfly’s wing – all became subjects worthy of capture. My camera became an extension of myself, a tool for translating the world as I saw it, a way to tell stories without uttering a single word.
Photography became more than just a hobby; it became a passion, a form of expression, a way to connect with the world on a deeper level. It was a legacy inherited, not just the camera itself, but the vision, the appreciation for the power of a single image. My grandfather’s camera is no longer just a camera; it’s a link to the past, a reminder of the stories he shared, and an inspiration to create my own. It’s a challenge to continue learning, to refine my skills, to see the world with fresh eyes. And every time I raise it to my eye, I feel his presence, a gentle nudge encouraging me to keep exploring, keep capturing, keep telling the stories that only light can write.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While Atlanta boasts a thriving arts scene, navigating it as a Black woman often means confronting a complex intersection of race, gender, and the inherent biases within the industry.
One of the most persistent struggles is visibility. Despite the abundance of talent, Black women photographers are often overlooked for major commissions, gallery representation, and influential exhibitions. The gatekeepers of the art world, consciously or unconsciously, frequently default to established narratives and familiar faces, leaving many gifted Black women artists struggling to gain recognition. This lack of visibility can lead to limited opportunities, hindering career progression and perpetuating a cycle of underrepresentation. Black women photographers, like many women in creative fields, often receive less compensation than their male counterparts, even for comparable work. This disparity reflects broader societal inequalities and underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability within the industry. Negotiating fair rates and securing adequate funding for projects can be an uphill battle, requiring resilience and self-advocacy in the face of systemic barriers.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The visual content and digital marketing landscape is in constant flux, and I foresee some exciting and significant shifts over the next 5-10 years. Video content will only become more critical. Short-form video, in particular, will continue to reign supreme, driven by platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. We’ll likely see more interactive and immersive video experiences, perhaps incorporating AR/VR elements, becoming mainstream. The demand for high-quality cinematic video for businesses will also rise as they strive to create engaging brand narratives. Artificial intelligence will revolutionize content creation. AI tools will assist with everything from image editing and video production to content generation and social media management. While some fear job displacement, I believe AI will primarily augment human creativity, allowing us to focus on higher-level strategic and artistic decisions. Think AI-powered editing suggestions, automated content scheduling, and AI-driven insights for campaign optimization. The rise of the creator economy will continue, with more individuals becoming content creators and influencers. Brands will need to adapt by collaborating with creators authentically and empowering their own customers to become brand advocates. Overall, the future of this industry is dynamic and exciting. Staying adaptable, embracing new technologies, and prioritizing authenticity will be crucial for success in the years to come.
