Today we’d like to introduce you to Taja Ambroise
Hi Taja, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my photography business during COVID after being temporarily laid off. Before that, I was a mom blogger—a real “Pinterest mom”—documenting my family’s travels and sharing all things motherhood. Photography felt natural to me, but I never saw it as more than a hobby. That changed when a coworker launched an online business during the shutdown and asked me to take their brand photos. I didn’t think much of it—until those images were shared and people started reaching out for sessions. As social media rapidly started growing, having the perfect image became a must, and before I knew it, my side hustle was bringing in more income than my job. But juggling work, photography, and motherhood became overwhelming, and I knew I had to choose. It was scary, but I bet on myself and followed the path that truly made me happy—and I’ve never looked back.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth, but I think that’s true for most small business owners. My biggest challenge was having to teach myself everything from scratch. I didn’t know anyone personally who was a photographer or a business owner, so I had to figure out not only how to run a business but also how to master photography itself. I spent countless hours learning about branding, marketing, finances, and everything it takes to be successful.
Another major hurdle was the cost of photography equipment. I wasn’t making much at my job, and quality gear is expensive, so I had to be extremely disciplined with my finances—saving and reinvesting every dollar I could. On top of that, Augusta isn’t a huge city, and photography wasn’t as popular at the time, so carving out a market for myself took patience and persistence.
And, of course, there’s the ongoing challenge of work-life balance. As a business owner and a mom, it’s something I’m always working on, but I remind myself daily to keep striving for that balance while growing my business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in studio portrait photography, with a focus on capturing maternity, graduation, and birthday sessions. These milestones are incredibly special, and I take pride in creating beautiful, timeless images that celebrate Black women and their journeys.
What sets me apart is the personal touch I bring to every session. I’ve built my business from the ground up and handle everything myself—photography, marketing, and content creation—so every part of the experience reflects my passion and dedication. I never take on more than I can handle because I want each client to receive my absolute best.
My studio is designed to feel warm, welcoming, and intimate. I guide my clients through the entire process, from booking to posing to selecting their final images, ensuring they feel comfortable and confident every step of the way. Communication is a top priority for me, and I pride myself on making each session an unforgettable experience.
More than anything, I want people to know that my brand is about more than just photos—it’s about celebrating and preserving moments in a way that makes every client feel beautiful, empowered, and seen.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can support my business by booking a session, renting my studio, or collaborating on creative projects. Photographers and brands can partner with me for styled shoots, branding content, or sponsorships. Engaging with my work—whether through referrals, social media shares, or word-of-mouth—also makes a huge impact. Every session, share, and collaboration helps me continue creating and celebrating life’s special moments.
