Check Out Chantelle Crowell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantelle Crowell

Hi Chantelle , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started with a love for storytelling and a deep desire to create something meaningful for children. My journey into writing children’s books was fueled by my own experiences as a parent of six. Watching my kids grow, learn, and navigate the world inspired me to craft stories that could entertain, educate, and uplift young readers.

At first, it was just for fun—writing little tales to share with my children. But as I saw how much they enjoyed them, I realized I had something special to offer. I took the leap into self-publishing, which wasn’t easy, but I was determined. The process involved researching the industry, refining my writing, and connecting with the right people to bring my books to life.

Over time, my work started gaining recognition. I was featured in BWA Black Women Author Magazine, I was on the cover BWA kids lit,Shoutout Atlanta, and Literacy Moments Magazine, and I became a member of the International Society of Female Professionals and was also featured in Power Magazine. My books made their way to major platforms like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, ThriftBooks, and even the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library through BiblioBoard. Seeing my work in libraries and bookstores was a surreal moment—it showed me how far I had come.

My journey hasn’t been without challenges, but my children have been my biggest motivation. Their encouragement keeps me going, and knowing that my stories can inspire other kids makes it all worth it. Now, I continue to write, always pushing myself to create books that leave a lasting impact.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My writing journey has been anything but smooth—it’s been filled with challenges, learning curves, and moments of self-doubt. One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced is visibility as a self-published author. Breaking into the industry without the backing of a major publisher meant I had to work twice as hard to market my books, build my audience, and get my stories into the hands of readers.

It took persistence—navigating the world of self-promotion, learning the ins and outs of book marketing, and finding the right platforms to showcase my work. There were times I questioned if I was reaching the right audience or if my efforts were enough. But through it all, I stayed committed, knowing that every step forward, no matter how small, was progress.

Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t change a thing. Each obstacle has taught me resilience, and every victory—big or small—reminds me why I started this journey in the first place.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In addition to being a children’s book author, I have also worked in both education and the medical field, gaining valuable experience that has shaped my perspective and storytelling. My time in education allowed me to connect with young minds, understand their curiosity, and see firsthand the impact that stories can have on their growth and imagination. Meanwhile, my experience in the medical field taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of compassion—qualities that I carry into my writing. These diverse backgrounds have not only influenced my storytelling but have also deepened my commitment to creating meaningful and inspiring books for children.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is gathering with my mother and family, sharing stories about our family’s history and dynamics. Those moments were filled with warmth, laughter, and meaningful conversations that deepened our bond. Sitting together, listening to tales of past generations, life lessons, and cherished memories created a strong sense of connection and identity. It was in those storytelling moments that I first understood the power of words—the way they can preserve history, bring people closer, and spark the imagination. Those experiences continue to inspire my own storytelling today.
