Today we’d like to introduce you to Eyvaine Walker
Hi Eyvaine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Cancer Awareness for Thrivers and Survivors (C.A.T.S.) is a nonprofit organization that is committed to advocate for cancer patients and their families. C.A.T.S. aim to offer practical emotional and financial solutions to ensure that cancer thrivers receive the support they need in their battle against the disease.
The organization was established following the profound personal tragedy of losing my daughter to breast cancer. My daughter Lt. Shakeya L. Walker, worked with the College Park Police Department. A courageous breast cancer thriver. She lived almost 8 years before losing her battle on her birthday January 16th, 2024. A scholarship in honor of my daughter has been established, and compensation is provided each year on the anniversary of her birthday.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Many cancer patients struggle to access reliable transportation for their treatments, particularly those who live in rural or economically disadvantaged areas. Missing treatments or facing delays can have detrimental effects on their health and recovery, so providing transportation is a key solution.
Cancer treatment is notoriously expensive, even with insurance coverage. High copayments and the cost of medications can overwhelm patients and their families, often leading to difficult choices between treatment and other basic needs. Nutrition plays a vital role in cancer recovery, yet many patients cannot afford or access the specialized diets they need during treatment. Whether due to financial constraints or lack of availability in their area, the problem of inadequate nutrition can hinder a patient’s recovery process.
Caregivers, who are often family members, bear a significant emotional and physical burden when caring for cancer patients. The exhaustion, stress, and lack of resources for caregivers can lead to burnout, negatively impacting both the caregiver and the patient. Many at-risk populations are unaware of the importance of early cancer detection, and the lack of accessible screening options means that cancer is often diagnosed at more advanced, less treatable stages.
Cancer brings a host of emotional, psychological, and logistical challenges for both patients and their families. The overwhelming nature of managing appointments, finances, and the emotional toll of the disease can create a sense of isolation and hopelessness. To solve these problems which are rooted in the healthcare system’s existence; Eyvaine Walker decided to launch a nonprofit organization “Cancer Awareness for Thrivers and Survivors”.
