Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmin Donkor
Hi Yasmin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Essence of Vitality was founded by my dad, Dr. Harry James Quao Donkor in August of 1996, when we moved to Atlanta from New York. My dad was born and raised in Accra, Ghana – he came from a long line of herbalists and wellness practitioners, which played a huge role in turning our family’s knowledge in herbalism and health into a business. I grew up watching my dad handcraft the herbal tonics and capsules within our line of products with much pride and dynamic. Today, I carry on that same pride and dynamic with our company’s products.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the beginning, the road wasn’t smooth – my dad was introducing a niche product that was in a niche category during an era where health and wellness was seen as a “crunchy,” or “hippie,” concept in the mid to late 1990’s in Atlanta. I remember my dad visiting many health food stores in-person, bringing samples, and speaking with the store managers to get his foot in the door with getting our products on their shelves. It was a lot of work but my dad was able to obtain our first few distributors, who still carry our products 28 years later.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the current CEO/Owner at Essence of Vitality LLC, a second-generation family-owned business. We are the manufacturers of 100% raw organic herbal tonics and capsules. Our products are aimed towards cleansing the bodies of extra waste and toxins to revitalize and boost overall health and wellness.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how Atlanta has grown into a cultural melting pot over the past two decades. There’s so much diversity in the people, food, culture, and music. I would say my least favorite thing about Atlanta that I think many residents would agree with is the traffic.
