Today we’d like to introduce you to Devyn Darden
Hi Devyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Reno, NV, but I have lived in five different states; Colorado, California, Arizona, Florida and lastly Georgia. For as long as I can remember, I grew up wanting to be a singer and didn’t transition into rapping until late into high school when my brother started learning how to make beats. When I got to college at Savannah State University is when my rap career really began. I dropped my first song on my 20th birthday in 2019 and had my first performance at a back to school party. I didn’t really take my music serious until I got pregnant and gave birth to my daughter in 2022. After I had her I’ve been dropping music consistently and performing more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would like to say it’s been pretty smooth, just had to find my groove really. When I began rapping I knew it would take a lot of time and money but was unprepared with how much I would have to invest. My first couple years I didn’t really record any music, only had 3 songs out but never promoted them. And I also struggled with not having the people around me support what I was doing, but have definitely overcame that. After I had my daughter I met some friends who taught me how to use bandlab which made it easier to record and cut down on the costs. Being a single mom and having a newborn, studio time was always really expensive for me and my engineer was far from me and I didn’t have a car so bandlab was the smartest option for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I mainly rap, however I would describe myself as an artist overall and not just a rapper because I do sing as well still. With finding my own sound its been described as sexy, laid back, trap which I think is perfect. I think what sets me apart most from other artists is that I’ve curated my own sound in music so that I can’t really be compared to anyone. What I’ve learned from my favorite artists is to just be 100% original and authentic and to use my music to say something. That is what I am most proud of as well because I have a clear message in my music being “It’s your world, everyone else is just living in it.” I am known for being extremely confident all around, and I want people who listen to my music to have the confidence I do.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I would say advice for others and myself in finding a mentor is to let them find you. In an industry like this, it can be hard to surround yourself with genuine people who believe in you, so a mentor/manager should be the one to find you and build a relationship with you. With networking, best advice is to talk to everyone in the room, first impressions matter. You never know who you’re in a room with so always be at your best.
