Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavia Roberts
Hi Octavia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am Dr. Octavia Roberts, a native of Atlanta, Georgia. I am the Co-Pastor of Open
Wings Ministries alongside my husband of nearly 25 years, Dr. Derrick Roberts.
I am a devoted wife, Mother of 7, Distinguished Author, Humanitarian, and Founder of Reset
Sleepover. This is an organization geared towards the empowerment of women. It is a sisterhood and a movement that is changing lives, crossing borders and breaking barriers and strongholds. I am committed to seeing women and our young daughters and teens break generational habits and press beyond the pressures of life. My goal is to prove that women can get along and that the most expensive thing they could ever put on is…confidence.
I did not come from a lot but I have experienced my share of heartache, pain, loss, betrayal and abuse. But I don’t use my past for sympathy or to make excuses, I use it as fuel to ignite my passion for helping others.
I lost my mother at the age of 9 to cancer. And although I remember seeing her in and out the hospital, wearing wigs due to chemo and radiation, the greatest memory I cherish about my mom is her telling and teaching me about a man named Jesus.
It is the seed planted by my mother that enabled me to survive life on the streets as a teenage parent and former drug dealer.
Since 2006, I have been preaching the Word of God to all who will listen. The name is my ministry is Open Wings Ministries, currently located in Riverdale, Georgia. My
testimony and tattoos draw people. My appearance confronts tradition and religion at the root and that is okay. I am merely someone who chose to try Jesus for myself. I chose to taste and see that the Lord is good. I chose before my mother went home to be with the Lord and I have been standing strong in my faith every since. I do not dare claim to be perfect. I am here to introduce or reintroduce people to healing because HE is worth it.
With Christ, the support of my devoted husband, and the seed planted by my mom, I am out to prove that serving Jesus is profitable. I am often asked by people what happened? How did I change? My answer is always the same: “Because God loved me and I believed I simply believed it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were many struggles I faced in life:
A teenage mother
A motherless child (mom passed from cancer)
High school drop out
In and out of foster care (nobody wanted to deal with/raise a rebellious child who was simply hurting from the loss)
I sold drugs and taught my now husband how to sell drugs in order to take care of our kids
Being molested as a child
Suffering a miscarriage and having people to tell you to be grateful because I have other kids
I could go on for days on how far God has brought me
Nothing in my life has been easy
But with God, I can boldly say it was worth it
To see the people who counted me out, come ask me to pray for them. To see the people that counted me out, congratulate me on becoming an author and purchasing products from me
To see my probation officer when I was a teen find me just to tell me how proud he was of me before passing away
To see my granddaddy walk me down the aisle when I never imagined that I could have ever been somebody’s wife
To watch my children surpass me at their age
To see my babies graduate high school and college and become successful entrepreneurs before 21
All I can say is, Thank you God
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Open Wings Ministries is my Church. I am Co-Founder alongside my husband. My church is Located in Riverdale, Ga. We are a 501c3 organization. We are non-denominational and we believe in Jesus Christ.
Under the umbrella of Open Wings, I founded a women’s ministry entitled Reset Sleepover. This Women’s retreat started off in Destin Florida 6 years ago. From Destin Florida, to my hometown Atlanta, to now traveling to various other cities, Chicago, Maryland, Dallas, Reset Sleepover is a ministry of healing and restoration. It is a safe place, a safe space for women to come together and begin again.
I minister to women, I pray with them, I encourage them, I help them to confront all of the things that keeps them from moving forward. I am most proud of where we as a whole have come. We started ministry in our home. My first women’s conference started in my living room. Now I am selling out conference rooms in Hilton Resorts across multiple states. I went from ministering in my home to gracing the stage of World Changers Church International.
I want people to know that I am proof that weeping endures for a night but joy comes in the morning. I want all of the readers to know they deserve a reset. They deserve to begin again. It is not too late. They are not too old. The time will always be now.
I offer many packages to help women experience Reset for themselves. No experience is the same. The location change, the experience change and the breakthrough is explosive. I have various resources available to help women Reset such as a confession CD, which is on digital format as well, multiple books, one in which was written with my husband so they can see a man’s perspective and clothing to serve as daily reminders and affirmations.
What’s next?
I am looking forward to taking Reset Sleepover international.
My plan is to continue to build and establish relationships and partnerships with people who understand the mission and vision.
Partnerships, sponsorships and sisterhood is what I am looking forward to. I’m looking forward to building a team and operations that can run and function and provide resources to women and teens.
I’m looking forward to helping more women step into the will of God for their lives.
