Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Smarr
Hi Olivia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve had an interest in filming since a young age. As a child, I’d record mundane videos, like reheating leftovers. I also often narrated my thoughts, as if I was being recorded. This progressed to recording clothing hauls on my Kindle in middle school. The idea of having a YouTube channel didn’t occur to me until high school, but I was too shy and lacked confidence, so it remained a faint thought.
Growing up, I struggled to develop my own sense of style, often mimicking my older sister’s fashion choices and seeking her approval. However, I believe my self-concept and confidence began to significantly improve when I cut my hair in 11th grade. I eventually started a YouTube channel at the end of 12th grade (2020). During quarantine, my sister and I started taking lots of photos together. This sparked an exploration of various social media platforms and creative outlets like hair, makeup, and photography.
I then found myself at the thrift store, where I unearthed my unique sense of style. It was there, that I blossomed. I stepped out of my comfort zone, let my creativity shine, and not only found my style but also boosted my confidence. As life unfolded, I continued to unlearn, learn, grow, and love. And here I am today, still evolving, living, shining, and loving – unapologetically! My hope is to inspire others to do the same: live, love, and shine authentically, without apology.
At a transformative point in my life, I shifted from a state of resistance to acceptance, attraction, and flow. I never considered owning or starting a business until about a year ago, when I discovered my interest in making jewelry, particularly charm necklaces and beaded earrings. As I explored this idea, the notion of creating bags sprouted, and the necessary supplies seemed to float into my hands.
The components of my business fell into place naturally, emerging from the void with ease and clarity. As I embraced my inner child and started to live authentically, I had an epiphany: I was a star. I then called myself a Star Girl. A song resonated deeply with me, gifting me with the alias “StarFlower.” Thereafter, I began to resonate with fairies, transforming into a Star Fairy, named StarFlower. When I decided to overcome my fear of the unknown and pursue my passions, I knew I wanted my business to be a joyful extension of myself – a creative expression of my values and quiddity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path hasn’t always been easy. I used to rely on external validation, struggled with self-doubt, and lacked support. Limiting beliefs I’d accumulated during my upbringing held me back. However, through self-reflection and growth, I’ve learned to recognize and overcome these limitations.
I’ve discovered the power of self-love and self-acceptance, becoming my own biggest supporter. This inner transformation has been pivotal. I have a lot to learn as I embark on my first business venture, I anticipate more ups and downs. But I’m not worried and eagerly look forward to this journey of lessons, experiences, and growth!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a jeweler and sewist here in Starrland! I create accessories for a wide range of supernatural and mythical beings, including witches & warlocks, mermaids, angels, pegasi, dragons, unicorns, vampires, and of course faeries but so many more! I make charm necklaces with an assortment of metal & handmade clay charms – my signature clay charm being clowns with 3d noses! I also make an array of dangly earrings and sew one-of-a-kind upcycled bags from second-hand materials, like jeans and bed sheets! Some bags feature fun adornments like buttons, brooches, and precious hand embroidery! (embroidered by me, unless disclosed otherwise) To top it off, I create custom bag chains/keychains and source second-hand wallets for the bags! Through my art I am able to channel my inner child and create freely. My brand is a reflection of me and my interests, it showcases eccentricity. Through my creations I aim to spread love, joy, and inspire individuality, one unique piece at a time! I am the most proud of myself for simply doing what I want, what brings me joy, and no longer seeking validation! Starrland will make its debut in late March, after the astrological new year! Merchandise will be promoted on my business page – @itsstarrland on Instagram – and purchases will be made through Depop! Thank you for reading – I love you! Keep shining your light!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I envision a fashion industry where sustainability and creativity thrive. In this future, second-hand materials become the norm, shining light on the need to use what’s already been made and reducing the need for excessive production! Slow fashion gains momentum, with consumers seeking out unique pieces from smaller, independent creators and businesses, rather than mass-produced corporate brands. Mending and altering become essential skills, as people learn to repair, reimagine, and transform their existing garments. Buttons are sewn back on, holes are patched, and old items are transformed into new, one-of-a-kind creations.
As a result, we increase innovative thinking and cut back on waste. By harnessing our collective creativity and resourcefulness, we can build a more sustainable and equitable fashion industry – one that celebrates new ideas, community, and the art of creative reuse. An industry that rejects the exploitation of underpaid humans with bad working conditions and mass production.
